re: Any Catholic guilt, Lent for you all? Friday no meat? What you got?

my favorite are the "Catholics" that can't have meat on Fridays. Make a big deal when you bring sausage biscuits to work on a Friday because you didn't think about the people that CAN'T eat meat.
They proceed to stuff their faces on Fridays with with the finest Louisiana seafoods all in the name of a sacrifice.
A lot of times, their the same Catholics that only go to mass on Easter and Christmas, or not at all.

Do you know how to keep a Baptist from drinking all your alcohol at a party? Invite another Baptist
Beauty pageant Christians who talk and look one way when they want to be seen and then act another way when no one is watching. Yes, this is the way.

I grew up in a very religious Baptist family in north La and Arkansas. I had never seen the ash thing until I went to LSU. I worked on campus and when I went in after class one day, my boss had ashes on her forehead all afternoon. Then I started looking around and a bunch of folks did. Seemed very weird to an 18 year old kid.

My shredded chicken is more of a sacrifice than sushi or a cheese pizza

I’m giving up meat on Fridays, making a real sacrifice for the Lord! Instead, I’m suffering by going out to eat delicious seafood in nice restaurants and $11/lb boiled crawfish.

I don’t give up anything and I don’t change my diet on fridays. I don’t do any of the other things Catholics are supposed to do so why stop there?
I have this discussion with my wife every year when she wants to go to church on Christmas and/or Easter. We don’t go the other 52 Sunday’s a year, and if we do go on Christmas we can’t make fun of the people who only go once a year because they’re us.

quote:The joke that resonates with small-town Southern folks about Baptists is the antithesis of your (admittedly clever) comment:
Well, one thing's for sure, when you find 4 Baptists together, you'll always find a fifth.
Q: How do you keep a Baptist from drinking all your beer on a fishing trip?
A: Invite a second one.

I'm giving up eating King Cake.
It's a sacrifice, but one I'm willing to make.

I'm not Catholic but am still giving up something for Lent which is alcohol.

I eat meat on Fridays and I don't feel bad about it. Jesus don't give a shite whether I eat a steak or not. Some of the rules are complete BS if you ask me.

For those that do participate in lent, I'm curious as to what you get out of it?
I was raised catholic but am not much of a practitioner. I always partake in lent. Maybe not by the specific rules. I either give up a bad habit, a crutch, or something of the like or inversely I force myself to do something that I should but normally wouldn't. For me its about practicing self control which is a skill that comes easier to some than others but regardless must be honed like any other. Lent is the season I work on my self control.

quote:I think the meaning and reason is lost. It should be a time when we remove things we have allowed to get in our way as we go through sanctification, and to go through a time of fast and prayer to remove habitual sins we have let take prominence in our lives. It is meant as a time to grow closer to God and to humble ourselves and ask for help overcoming the obstacles that hinder our spiritual walk as we approach Easter. The celebration of the ultimate act of humility and sacrifice as Jesus fulfilled the old covenant and set-forth the new covenant that allows us as filthy heathen gentiles an opportunity for sanctification. Unfortunately Lenten season feels a lot like New Years with people making sacrifices and just going oh well if they fall short instead of reaching out in humility to overcome, or half-hearted sacrifices that are not a sacrifice at all just to check the box.
it isn't going to do much of anything in your spiritual situation

They’re the ones that go to mass every week as well, that also post on facebook their lent feast that’s supposed to be a sacrifice or fast.

I have no need to prop up the Italian fishing industry. I’ll eat meat.

I don’t give up anything. I just set goals.
Work out X number of days. Read X number of books
This year my goal is to read four books(1/week)
