Giving up as many things that I can that keep me away from Christ. Using Lent as an excuse to make good habits.

For participating in lent?
Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.

My family is very Catholic and they all "give up meat" on Friday but love to eat out and order seafood platters or boil 2-3 sacks of crawfish.
Quite the sacrifice.
I'm also Catholic but I don't "give up" anything during Lent. I also don't appreciate being criticized for eating a chicken tender on Friday by the ones that drool while their fried frog legs are being brought to their table.
It's usually good for a nice debate or two during the season as I expose the hypocrites.

Not Catholic but will absolutely hit up the local fish fry’s. We do it big here in Louisville.

One of the best ways I have had it explained to me was as simple as if you can't think of a habitual sin that you need to remove, then what could you add to your life that would bring you closer to God? What in your life is keeping you from adding that?
Need daily prayer time? Give up 5-10 minutes of your day for that. Need to study the Word more? Give up 10 minutes of your day and set it aside for that. Need to slower to anger? Give up anger by having a time of prayer and reflection. Need to do more acts of service? Find local outreaches and give up time and/or money for those in need.

If I can't find a good seafood restaurant, I'll go to Taco Bell for their spicy potato soft taco and veggie bowl.

Friday no meat?
Ah yes, the huge sacrifice of no meat on Friday so they have crawfish boils and fish frys instead. Seafood is meat too.

They proceed to stuff their faces on Fridays with with the finest Louisiana seafoods all in the name of a sacrifice.
I have this conversation with my wife every year, although we do go to church at least 45 Sundays a year. I always ask, how are you making a sacrifice if all you are doing is substituting it with something that you enjoy just as much, if not more, but rarely eat outside of lent season. In many ways, "your sacrifice" is actually upgrading the quality of your meals

A lot of times, their the same Catholics that only go to mass on Easter and Christmas, or not at all.
Same guys who boldly proclaim in every fast food thread they don't dare partake. Well, until the Filet O'Fish

Life long catholic, once I realized what Lent was, I stopped worry about "giving" something up. Nothing I can give up will be sacrifice when we have so much variety in available foods. So, when i think of it and realize its Ash Wed or Good Friday, I will not eat meat, but for the most part throughout lent I just try to do something good an pay it forward.

I'm sure you typed all this as some sort of flex. But it comes more like you carry guilt for not practicing your faith in the same manner your family does. You sound angry. And a tad bitter. Rather than pick a fight with your family over it, you should probably do some reflection as to why you feel such hostility. Try to find some peace.

Rather than give something up, I attend at least one weekday mass every week during Lent.
Posted on 2/18/26 at 8:43 am to drizztiger
I'm doing no candy/ice cream and using lent to give up my diet coke habit.
My wife is going through OCIA (formerly RCIA) and will be baptized Catholic this Easter. I finally have some support for lent this year.
