AE makes great shoes. I've got pairs that have lasted many years, just keep getting them resoled. Good fitting, quality shoes are something worth paying for.

Got my nephew a pair of the Rainier boots last year. Soft leather and lambskin lined. He is 18. When I explained caring for them and getting them recrafted because they could last 10-15 years or more if care for properly, he was shocked. Yup. He'd been buying $100 cowboy boots that have to be thrown away after a year or two.

I almost exclusively buy shoes made in the USA which makes them expensive but (so far) historically good.

Life is too short for bad teeth or shitty shoes.

You aren't getting a real leather stacked heel with most, if not all Allen Edmonds.

They use fiberboard for their heel bases, plenty of youtube cobblers showing it when they resole. Nothing wrong with it really, Its just typically not fully leather.

But how many people would drop similar that on a pair of nice western boots and think it's worth it? Still a small number compared to the average person, but I know plenty of guys who'll drop serious money on boots, then turn and scoff at spending it on an oxford.

It's a seriously weird "hobby", I know. I guess it's really not a hobby, but I thoroughly enjoy shining my shoes and will spend money on care products. Every few weeks, I'll pull several pairs out and bring them back to looking great. I have pairs 6+ years old that people will ask if they are new after a shine. Then once you get to that level, you start noticing things that a typical person never would, but then you like it. And then when you want a new pair of shoes, you end up justifying the cost (not a literal justification, but that typical thing we do to justify purchasing shite we don't need). I still haven't broken $600. But could see doing it. I fully expect my shoes to last 20 years though and the styles I buy are timeless.
