re: Allen Edmonds having Great Anniversary Sale right now

Meh, they don't really cost any more in the long run because you can get them resoled several times.
A good pair of dress shoes will last you 7-10 years. The $99 specials at the shoe station last me a year and have to be tossed.
Right now I have my eye on Cobbler Union. They make outstanding shoes at a great value. Current sale is 20% off with a chance to earn up to 25% lifetime.
The shoes are a bit pricey for me, especially buying dress shoes in the current economy. But if the Museum Oxblood Oxfords get to 50% off then I'm in.

Need an OT rating on these (Magnanni):
Looking for a black shoe, although this is more gray / black. My only pair of black dress shoes are AE's Delray (great shoe that I have had for 8 + years).

This thread inspired me to buy more shoes. I looked at AE's web site wanting to take advantage of the sale, but couldn't find anything that I liked. Just bought these (Magnanni):

I'm no OT baller but dear Lord Almighty who in the hell is paying $600+ for shoes????
Shell cordovan’s a hell of a drug. I’ve paid way more than $600 for some cigar, ravello, and whiskey runs from Alden and those don’t hold a candle to some of the English shoemakers.
Fortunately I have a normal shaped foot so I don’t see much value in bespoke shoes, I think closed channel soles look silly, and I don’t like the lasts and welts offered by most continental manufacturers. Otherwise I’d be spending way more.
I justify it by saying that I’ll be wearing these shoes for the next 30 years professionally (they won’t go out of style) and they will last provided they are properly recrafted every decade ($160/pair). 240 wearings per year for business x 30 years + church, weddings, and funerals comes to around 9000 times I’ll need to wear these shoes. Seems like a decent investment.

You like the chiseled toe, huh? I'm not the biggest fan, although I do have a couple of pair.

Stay away from wholecuts unless you’re involved in the trafficking of sex or drugs. Also acceptable if you’re in sales and want to advertise that you have more money than taste.
Since your only black shoes are Delrays you should really look into a captoe balmoral. That’s the standard black shoe.

Just wanting something different as I have the "traditional" dress shoe.

Not sure if serious? It's a shoe man.

I get it.
My favorite brand is Mezlan, although some of their design and style is far too exquisite and out there for my taste.

Personally, I am not a fan of black and only have one pair of black shoes - park avenues that I wear with my charcoal suit. In fact, I'm hoping with the right pair of oxbloods I can banish those to funerals only.
What are your experience with wholecuts? I've always been hesitant to pull the trigger due to concerns about creasing even I if use shoe trees.

Same exact situation for me as well, I only have one pair of black shoes.

Never owned a pair. The one I posted earlier on this page caught my eye.

I bring (and use) shoe trees when I travel (and at home). Hadn't really given it too much thought on the creasing, but perhaps I should think this through before pulling the trigger.

This is another one that I like from Magnanni. Looks like it may have been discontinued but it can be found on Amazon for $260 which for this brand is a "good deal."

Not at all, they look great in person. The handcraftsmanship is phenomenal from Magnanni.

Interesting. Hard for me to have an opinion, except that they are not really my style. Conservative and simplistic is more what I go for. Maybe the wholecut aspect is throwing me off (also that diagonal stripe thing on the side). These are more my style:

Meh. Good for a blake stitch shoe. You'll get a sleeker profile compared to a similar priced goodyear welted shoe. There are definitely GY welted shoes that can match the sleeker profile, but you'llpay more than AE.
In general, I'm not a huge fan of Magnanni styling though.
