I see the problem. That passenger didn’t have their tray table up in the locked position.

You refuse to put your phone in airplane mode and the next thing you know a 3x3 chunk of the plane is gone.

this was not an exit row door. It looked like it from the outside, but Alaska Air chose to have it look from the interior like a regular window seat. So it was NOT a question of the crew not fastening the door properly. It wasn't a door.
There was nobody sitting in that window seat on this flight. What a .....coincidence. The boy whose shirt was torn off him is lucky to be alive.
I wouldn't fly in one of these planes!

Didn’t the seat near the window get sucked out the plane completely?

It wasn’t an exit row door but there was a door there that blew out. This is a different tail but you can see the door on the fuselage of the 737 max 9 in the spot where the blow out occurred. So it will be an issue with how that spot was secured even if Alaska isn’t configured to use it.

I don’t think you’re supposed to be able to stick your hand out the window of a passenger airplane.

Maybe he was trying to shoot a gremlin that was on the wing.

A door defect or a mistake by the ground crew?

Didn't look like an exit row from the inside pics, but the outside pics look to be in the shape of a door. Weird situation.

And as far as I know, the hull of the new Max wasn't changed from the old, which is the reason for the other issues..the engines being too far forward bc they retro-fitted larger engines on the old 737s, but didn't change anything else (raise the height to fit).

I”m with you here and wanted to mention it. As far as I know the MAX is using the same hull as all the other 737’s which leads a person to believe it isn’t a design issue. It was definitely the exit row door that blew out though.

I don’t know. Looks like a door opening to me. Maybe not exit row.

It’s a plugged door. Can be configured as an emergency exit depending on flight density. They can move exit doors all over the place depending on how they configure the cabin seating

It’s a door plug in place of a typical door. The number of door exits is dictated by the number of seats. The way this plane had the classes configured, it did not require that door to be an exit based on the number of seats.

Had it been all economy with more seats, this exit would have had to be in service as an exit door. So it was not a door latching issue caused by the cabin crew.

Ever since American Airlines bought Alaskan back in the '80's, it's been a mess.
I remember them having a disaster because of poor maintenance, just to keep the crews and planes in the air per American's directives.

Professional Pilots' Rumor Network PPRuNe.org often has interesting scuttlebutt about incidents like these.

Speculation there is that the door was previously repaired by the airline, and the aircraft reported difficulty maintaining cabin pressure the day before.

YouTube link posted again in that thread.

American doesn't own Alaska. Alaska is one of the best airlines in the country, if not the best.
