$250,000 income qualifies you for subsidized housing

This economy is so fricked up.

Palo Alto is seeking housing solutions for residents who are not among the region’s super-rich, but who also earn more than the threshhold to qualify for affordable housing programs. The city council has unanimously passed a housing plan that would essentially subsidize new housing for what qualifies as middle-class nowadays, families making from $150,000 to $250,000 a year. The plan would focus on building smaller, downtown units for people who live near transit and don’t own cars, along with mixed-use retail and residential developments.

“Prices have just gone through the roof, making it unaffordable for middle-class people, your firefighters, your teachers, and, frankly, some of your doctors,” Palo Alto Vice Mayor Greg Scharff said. Scharff worries that losing middle-class workers will hurt the city. “What the council is proposing is that we work together to fund and subsidize, what is basically middle-class housing; which, traditionally, has not been subsidized,” Scharff said.

Well, either buy something that you can afford and not blow past your means, or move somewhere with more affordable housing for your budget.
Really not that difficult.

North Dallas is definitely NOT a buyers market right now. From what I hear, Houston and Austin are not either. Frickin California transplants.

That's the whole point. The area is losing its middle class workers and tax base.

That is a local community making a decision. Palo Alto isn't cheap and if they have approval from their constituents, that is their business.

I agree. It doesn't mean that it's any less messed up to make $250k and need subsidized housing.

$250,000 a year definitely doesn't go as far as it used to.

My company is in Palo Alto. I live within walking distance, but you would not believe some of the commutes that my employees make. I have 4 guys that drive in from Modesto. They work 12 hours on Monday, share a room at a motel, work 10 hours on Tuesday, and drive home. They are off on Wednesday. They repeat the 2 day ritual on Thursday and Friday. It is absolutely crazy.

What? I make less than half that and my wife is a stay at home mom to our two kids and we live very comfortable and are able to put a significant amount away in savings monthly.

You live in a shack. A park bench if you have to! Don't be a pussy and make yourself a man! It's the American way!

There are a crap load of couples that send their kids to the same private school as mine that both the mom and dad combines make between 150-200k a year. They drive nice cars and live in a nice house and take vacations.
You can easily live on that and enjoy life.

Lol you're so full of shite. That income in Louisiana would be in the top five percent. There are only three places I could think of where that income would be middle class at worst And that would be in the aforementioned Palo Alto region, DC, and New York. Again, middle class at worst. To say it isn't much for a typical two child family is asinine.

It doesn't sound too crazy, tbh.
