So the bay area doesn't need firefighters, teachers, police, etc?

Of course. And no one is forcing them to buy $800K real estate.

650sf studio apartment not big enough for your family? Move somewhere else you can afford. I'm sure that firefighters, teachers, and police are needed elsewhere than just the bay area.

It's not hard to understand. You don't have a right to live wherever you want unless you can pay for your property/home.

But this is a community deciding to subsidize on their own because they desire these people in their city. I don't see the problem.

It goes pretty damn far for most places still:

You are looking at 13,000 take home after taxes, health ins, and 401k

So lets say you have a real nice house= $2500 a month note
Nice cars- $1,000 a month note
two little shits private school if needed= $1500 a month
cable bill-$200 a month
cell phone=$200 a month
electricty=$200 a month
gas= $250 a month
groceries=$500 a month

I used big numbers and we still have $6,700 a month left over for entertainment,vacation, savings etc etc

That is easy living

You know how fast that $6,700 gets eaten up by hookers and blow. Sorry my sarcasm was too subtle.

That's their choice. What's their income? If it's 250k, they prob a my have 1M dollar homes in Modesto.

It is their choice. I was just pointing out the lengths some people will go to get into a reasonable home.

The 4 of them fall into a "lab tech" grouping. They all have community college technical degrees, and none of them makes over $100K. Three own homes in Modesto. One is actually from Merced. All 4 homes are 1500 ft range ranch houses.

If they tried to get something in the Bay Area, they would get a place they don't want in an area they wouldn't want to live in.

Exactly, but that will create a huge, potentially very dangerous, shortfall for these jobs. You have the potential of crime skyrocketing without a proper police presence.

Can't wait to see the New Orleans housing bubble burst in the next decade

Absolutely ridiculous the prices I'm seeing that they're trying to pass off for quality homes

People are there in large quantity because the jobs are there. They don't need to subsidize housing, they need to reconfigure housing. Fewer homes and more sky scrapers is how you fit more people into the same location more cost effectively. Yeah you lose the yard and the white picket fence, but that's what nice parks are for.

Understood, and I'm glad to see this be a community decision. I'm just explaining why it will likely fail/cause more problems in the future. I'd be willing to bet that this causes housing prices in the area to go up even more.

Don't see it happening, but I agree on the ridiculousness of the prices in conjuction with crime, COL, etc.

That was the point in posting the article. An area is pricing out an entire class, which includes service industry that they depend on.

Yes, supply and demand will eventually kick in.

If this happens, then there will be less demand to live in such a city, and costs of living will go down to attract people.

If a company cannot attract employees to the city where its jobs are, then the company will either need to raise salaries or relocate to a more desirable location.

Exactly.

Given the market there, this makes sense.

Even Palo Alto needs teachers and firemen.

I know that may not matter to some, but that is a townhome, not a standalone single family home.

Well, it can happen any day now. I grew up in Palo Alto and we were priced out almost 30 years ago. Prices keep rising.

Free market economics won't kick in in a place like California where it isn't close to being a free market.
