Or probably never been to either NYC or CA. San Diego and San Francisco are crazy expensive as well.

So lets say you have a real nice house= $2500 a month note
Nice cars- $1,000 a month note
two little shits private school if needed= $1500 a month
cable bill-$200 a month
cell phone=$200 a month
electricty=$200 a month
gas= $250 a month
groceries=$500 a month

Reality is more like this:
So lets say you have a real nice house= $3,000 a month note
Nice cars- $1400 a month note
Three little shits private school if needed= $5400 a month
cable bill-$200 a month
cell phone=$200 a month
electricty=$200 a month
gas= $250 a month
groceries=$1200 a month

So $1,285 left over for clothes, eating out, recreation, vacations, aftercare, kids extra curricular activities, home maintenance, and a hundred other of life's little costs. $250k doesn't go that far if you are trying to live in a nice safe area that doesn't have good public schools.

Reality is these three are exclusive. No fricking way I'm going to have a $700 car note if my kids are in private school. And what idiot is marrying a count who demands a house that costs $3k a month. That's the problem. Women. It's not the salary.

New Orleans.

$3,000 for a home payment equates to a $560,000 house with 20% down and a mortgage balance of around $450k plus annual taxes and insurance. If you are looking in a nice area here that is hardly a high price. Top private schools are all 18k+ per kid.

So the bay area doesn't need firefighters, teachers, police, etc?

Supply v Demand. No one is forcing them to work in that area. If I'm a member of one of those groups and I can't find some place to live that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, I'm looking for another place to work and live.

If that happens enough then the property values go down (due to people not wanting to live where there are no police/fire dept/schools), the salaries for those positions go up enough to afford a home or some combination of the two.

Government involvement in the manner listed in the OP is a band-aid at best but usually just a placebo as all it does is kick the can down the road (see also: Bobby Jindal SAVE).

What you've just described would make someone pretty damned wealthy, objectively speaking.
