Im telling you right now you are living a great life if you make 250k in NOLA.
Posted on 3/23/16 at 9:32 am to lsupride87
Yea, he's off base with that. You don't have to send your kid to Sacred Heart, Newman, or Country Day, but 560k for a house isn't some huge mansion here or anything.

FYI at a good Catholic school it is closer to 4k per kid).
Actually most of the "good" schools are around 9k.

quote:I will fricking take it. Don't forget about car insurance though. That shite is expensive in Cali.Throw an extra rack towards mortgage for good measures. That will still leave you with 3 racks a month. I'd put $1500.00 in savings at the very end of the month and roll over the excess cash. At the end of the year. I'd roll over the rest of my excess cash into a mutual fund.
So for CA:
$2,500 note goes to $5,000(that gets you a million dollar home)
$1,000 car note is the same
Little shits private school goes from $1,500 to $0. It aint going to be needed there
cable goes from $200-$250
your electricity will stay the same, or maybe go down. so lets keep it the same at $200
cell phone stays at $200
gas goes from $250 to $500
groceries goes from $500 to $750
So now you still have $5,000 for entertainment/savings/vacation a month

Depending on your neighborhood. The average house price Uptown is 500k.

It goes pretty damn far for most places still:
In most places, yes. But the story is about the bay area in California and that changes things drastically. Over 15 years ago a friend and her husband had both just graduated in mechanical engineering and took jobs in southern California. Three blocks from the beach they were paying ~$2k/month for a 900sqft apartment.
Just a quick look at Zillow shows ridiculous prices for tiny places (the cheapest listing for Palo Alto is a 557sqft foreclosed condo for $575k).
As I said in my previous post (to another poster), I would just move the frick out to somewhere where my job brings in a livable salary for my community.

No shite, I could move to the Westbank or Metairie and have a much cheaper mortgage, but if we are talking about living in a safe part of the city a nice home is probably going to be around 500k.

Not in NOLA for a family with several kids. In the Burbs maybe.

If you can't live comfortably on $250K in California or elsewhere for that matter, then it is likely because of government intervention that has prevented the free market from working. Or you are bad at life. If a person or family cannot afford something or it is not appealing to them, then they won't buy it, lowering demand, thus lowering the cost.
If firefighters and police (or any other lower income person who's work makes a community better) can't afford to live in San Fran, the quality of public services and the community in general will go to shite. Then people and families won't want to live there (lower demand), then the price of living will come down.
Bay area prices housing prices specifically are so high because the government there has literally limited the supply of land where housing can be built (greenspaces, etc.). There is a low supply of actual housing, so obviously prices will be high.
It's not hard to understand. You don't have a right to live wherever you want unless you can pay for your property/home.
