You're young... need me to explain this to you?

Nothing to explain, price gouging and encroachment by the rich, along with gentrification, squeeze decent working people out of their housing.

Safe and decent housing should be a right (I think it is, but I don't want to be shouted down today).

My cows are awesome and they love me A couple were 4H projects (not mine) so they are super friendly (I've had an avatar with a picture of me hugging one of my cows). The bull is very good natured too.

They did get out the other day, but the only one of my neighbors who is around my age went out and rounded them up (I was in town). He's a good guy (for an Aggie).

So many replies in here are hilarious. If you live in an area where it is $1million for a 1,300 square foot home, you're a fricking retard. If you have to pay > $5K to send your kids to school, move. My son's public high school in Slidell produces more National Merit Semifinalists than schools like Brother Martin. It's called common sense, people. If you can't live VERY well on $200K, you're doing a LOT of things very wrong.

Of course I could move to some less than desirable area and buy a house and land at $100/sq ft while sending my kids to public school, but that doesn't appeal to everyone. You understand that, right? I wouldn't move to a city just because there is a good school there. I'd rather live where I want and pay to send my child to a good school.

I'm thinking of making the move to the East Bay...i live in a 1 bedroom house.

Places like Concord, Walnut Creek or a lot more affordable than anywhere on the peninsula.

I'm thinking Benicia. Prices are somewhat reasonable there. $500,000 can get you a 2-3 bedroom house with nice views.

They are about $160 billion in debt due to unfunded retirement liabilities.

Im talking Manhattan, not Queens, Brooklyn or the Bronx.

I used to work out of there and of the folks who made $150 to $250K - to a person all said they couldn't afford to live in Manhattan.
200k would be scraping by paying rent in Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Chelsea, West Village, SoHo and Tribeca. Virtually everywhere else you would be comfortable
