To give another example, the quarterback is intending to clock the ball. He starts the throwing motion, bringing the ball up and it slips out of his hand and goes backward. Is it a fumble? He didn't REALLY mean to fumble the ball. The intent was to clock it.

This And note, they stopped the clock after a Saints offensive play in OT, when the defensive player stayed down after missing an open field tackle. Didn't tag Detroit with a timeout on that.
I’m really interested in what happened here. Because during the replay of the catch you can hear the head ref on the mike announcing something to the crowd (unfortunately you can’t make out what he’s saying). Vilma then says the ref said the Saints had to take a timeout (and remember there was a declined DPI penalty on the play; which I would think by itself stops the clock) because the play did not cause the injury to Olave. Now assuming Vilma is relaying it correctly (and maybe that’s not the case); how in any universe can you say a guy slamming into the ground and getting the wind knocked out of him didn’t occur because of the play?? That timeout cost us an extra play, and with even a few more yards that field goal is a much better shot at being good. It really sucks being a Saints fan sometimes.

Something like that happened to the Saints against the 49ers. This was about 20-25 years ago. Not sure it was "backwards", but one of the pre-Brees scrubs we had had at QB took a snap in a spike situation. He lost control of the ball (never really had it) and tried to to bat it down in a throwing motion. Of course, it was ruled (correctly) a fumble.
And, no surprise, Saints lose.
And, no surprise, Saints lose.

He didn’t have a great game overall, but he still shows promise. Made a couple of solid plays when needed…

I posted the rule here multiple times today.
If the refs rule it a pass (which they did, and I disagree with that call), then it cannot be a backwards pass due to contact

Yes
And there were three plays there where the Cowboys hit Dart above the shoulders and roughing the QB was not called.

yes, I remember that. It was Steve Walsh and it was called a fumble. Instead of trying to recover the all, Walsh just started arguing that it was an attempted pass. If there's a way for the Saints to get screwed, it'll happen.
