The Athletic Mock Draft by their beat writers:
quote:

10. New Orleans Pelicans
Corey Kispert | 6-7 wing | 22 years old, senior | Gonzaga
Kispert is the oldest player to come off the board so far (22 years old) and there’s a good chance he ends up being the only senior drafted in the top 20. The last time the Pelicans took an upperclassmen with a lottery pick they drafted Buddy Hield at No. 6 overall in 2016, and he lasted about half a season before getting shipped to Sacramento in the Boogie Cousins trade.

Much like Hield back then, Kispert has a chance to be the perfect complement to the established young stars in New Orleans as a floor spacer and secondary offensive weapon. Kispert is arguably the best 3-point shooter in this year’s draft and he has a great feel for playing off ball-dominant stars. He knows how to find open spaces on the floor and will immediately improve this season’s 26th-ranked 3-point shooting team.

He doesn’t necessarily have All-Star potential, but Kispert is the exact kind of player the Pels need to open up those clogged driving lanes for Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram.

Sam Vecenie's The Athletic Mock Draft:

quote:

10. New Orleans Pelicans

Franz Wagner | 6-9 forward | 19 years old, sophomore | Michigan

The player: Wagner is an interesting 3-and-D prospect at 6-9. His movement is terrific, with great lateral quickness. He can guard a variety of perimeter players on the ball, but his off-ball instincts are absolutely spectacular. He knows exactly where to be positionally, and his reactivity to get deflections is outstanding. The big question revolves around his shot, which comes and goes far too often. Sometimes, he looks like a legit 40 percent 3-point shooter in the future. Other times, he looks like a 30 percent guy and totally non-confident in the jumper mechanics. Whichever one he is will determine his career. If he becomes that high-level shooter, he’ll be a very high-level role player who starts. If he doesn’t, he’s more in the vein of his brother, Moritz, as an end-of-the-rotation guy.

The fit: The Pelicans need to surround Zion Williamson with two things: shooting and defense. Wagner’s defensive IQ would be a huge help next to Williamson and Brandon Ingram, especially at 6-foot-9. If you believe in his jumper long-term as I do, then this would be about as perfect a fit between that duo as you’ll find.

Wagner over Moody would be a fireable offense imo

If we pass on Moody for Wagner, I might flip a table.

Dude has defensive potential. he's a 6'4 guy who has a 7'0 wingspan

Agreed. If we keep the pick, I’m hoping for Moody or Mitchell.

Moody is listed at 6'6, but you got his wingspan right. Idk why we would hope for Franz to develop his shot, when Moody already has his.

Moody is 1a
Mitchell is 1b

I flip flop on them daily.

According to the combine:
Moody is 6'4.5'' without shoes
Mitchell is 6'0'' without shoes

Moody should be the pick considering that wingspan of 7'0 for a guard/SF is elite territory.

some top wing defenders:
Jimmy Butler - 6'7.5"
Kawhi Leonard - 7'3"
Jrue Holiday - 6'7"
Ben Simmons - 7'0" (not official, but reports)
Paul George - 6'11.25"
Robert Covington - 7'1.75"
Draymond Green - 7'1.25"

Moody is right at 7'0. mitchell is 6'4.5" (that's an issue)

Mitchell was never going to be a wing though.

I get what you are saying, it might be an issue.

I like what i saw out of moody at arkansas but i dont remember him being some lock down defender.

He was their offense.

Kispert's stock is way down from in the middle of the season, but he is still the pick I want. Adding shooting is crucial to fully unleash Zion.

oh no, don't get me wrong. i'm not saying he is gonna be a wing.

I'm saying he's undersized in general. even for a guard that's tiny. Kira Lewis for comparison had a 6'5" wingspan in 2018.

If we're ever gonna be a better defensive team, we need some bigger, smarter guys.

I get that but mitchell has more mass and is a great defender.

Would it be nice if he had a few more inches on his wingspan, yes, but i still like him.

Just don't know if i like him enough to take him at 10.

Want to go back and watch moody again.

I remembered really liking him last year.

Sounds like Wagner is a taller Josh Hart.

I hear what you're saying, but Mitchell would still make us a drastically better team defensively.

Just the pace and energy he would bring at the point of attack, it would set the tone for our entire defense.

They shoot similar percentages on 3s (Moody .358 wagoner .343) and free throws (Moody.812 wagoner .835), why is it considered that Moody has developed his shot but wagoner hasn't? Every report I have seen has Wagoner as an elite defender already and I don't understand how his shot is believed to be so much worse than Moody's on this board.

I don’t know that he’s going to be some super lockdown guy, but he projects as like a Mikal Bridges/Robert Covington type player. Which is still a very useful player if you’re getting him at 10.

the problem is that his defensive potential is SEVERELY limited by his lack of height/length

he's not going to be playing against guys he's much older than anymore, so it's a real concern

i could see him into the late teens now

I like the idea of kispert, but reality is that it usually takes these type of guys a few years to find their footing in the league. Getting shots off in the NBA and defending is vastly different than college. Short wing span and avg athleticism

Was digging into stats last night, Kispert comps out comparably to Desmond Bane from pure shooting.
Not sure on measurables.

Going back last few years, not many guys have made 2.8+ 3pg at 44% clip.
