Independence Day.

Sure, I get the concept and like it. Aliens attack and decimate cities. Humans rally and fight back. Sounds like a great film.

But Jesus the acting in that movie is shite. Across the board.

The president's speech that so many people love, is laughable.

Randy Quaid's character is cartoonish beyond reason, and the scene where he flies the jet up the death ray to Kamikaze the ship is just dumb. Everything about the way its shot, from the slow speed of the plane to the perfect vertical angle of the flight path just screams high school film project.

I can't watch it without feeling my IQ drop.

This is true

And sending a computer virus to the aliens with a 1996 laptop was beyond goofy too.

But whatever.

The frick?

exactly my thoughts when i finally watched it.

I'm with you on that, although TBL is overrated for me due to how much my college friends loved it. I heard it quoted (and quoted it myself) for years before I ever actually watched it. So once I did, it was meh. It was enjoyable enough, but it had been hyped up to me as one of the best/funniest movies ever, and it wasn't even close to resembling that for me.

I'll throw out:

The Joker (2019). It was good, sure. But it was jizzed over practically universally. And I enjoyed it much more when I first saw it when it was named Taxi Driver.

I'll always defend this. How is it goofy? They have had computers connected to that thing for decades, so why would it not be able to be hacked or given a virus?

People act like Goldblum just waltzed in there and plugged his Mac into the ship and started doing shite. That ship had been studied for 40 years, with shite hooked up to it everywhere. And how would it not make sense that if he was hooked into the small ship then once that ship reconvened with the mothership it would be hooked up to that? It makes perfect sense (at least in a "plausible for a movie" way).

Shawshank Redemption.

It's entertaining and saccarin and heartwarming by the numbers. It's a good movie.

I think where I get off is the fact this movie is "Goated" all the time. It's just not alpha tier to me.

Without question for me ‘Silence Of The Lambs.’

I can't downvote this enough. The book was great and this was one of the few movies ever that was actually better than the book.

The scene where he killed the two cops while in the cage was one of the funniest scenes in the history of filmdom. I actually laughed out loud and was greeted with stern stares in the theater.

You have a weird sense of humor.

But answering the question:

8 1/2. Widely viewed by critics as one of the greatest movies of all time. The movie is complete trash and just an hour and a half of stupidity. The biggest example of a critics "I am smarter than you" reasoning for giving a movie so much praise.

99% of Woody Allen films. The guy just pumps out mediocre movies non stop and they all get love by critics because, umm, it's Woody Allen!

The head scientist said that it had only turned on when the mothership arrived.

Regardless, it's a fun movie and there is plenty of ridiculous stuff aside from the virus plot hole.

Vivica A Fox not getting roasted alive by hiding in a closet is far worse.

The fact that it won was when I realized the Oscars jumped the shark.

I mean, the only movie it was up against that I could possibly make a case for winning over Silence of the Lambs would have been Beauty and the Beast.

It's a much better film than Bugsy, JFK, or The Prince of Tides...

Felt the same about Black Panther. I highly enjoy BP and it’s very rewatchable, but come on guys. It’s mid tier.

The fawning popularity of this one is very easy to explain

I’m a huge mob/gangster movie guy and people have told me Boondock Saints is a masterpiece.

I’ve given it 3 tries and I guess I just don’t get it.
