The Joker. Full of liberal sanctimony and self seriousness but ultimately an empty film about a depressed man, but not The Joker

A Christmas Story: (1983)

My siblings love this movie. I don’t understand the attraction to this film at all.

Were you the generational target audience... Or older?

Because they showed that movie in Middle Schools and High Schools to teach about peer pressure. Its definitely a time and place movie.

Exactly, just as overrated as Friends or Seinfeld.

I understand why people don’t understand people liking Lost in Translation. You kind of have to live it to understand it. You have to have been a stranger in a strange land.

First time I saw it, I thought it was pretentious bullshite. The next time I saw it is when I was abroad in that situation, and very homesick after some of my friends returned to the States. I watched it again during that time and it helped me process what I was going through at the time. It’s now one of my favorite films of all time, possibly in my Top 10, certainly in my Top 20.

I am going to get slaughtered here.

Back to the future.

I liked it as a kid but they are hard to watch today.

The Goonies. I actually do understand why this one is popular, though. It's because a lot of people saw it as a kid so it gets a pass on pure nostalgia rather than any merit.

The first half you're on the right track. The second half you lose your way. The Goonies is a kid's idea of a perfect adventure. Pirates' treasure, boobie traps, adventure maps, excitement without real danger or violence, at least not explicitly shown. If you watch it purely from an adult perspective then sure it's a little shallow, but you're missing the obvious intention that it's a children's adventure.

What's not to love about this movie? You have great music, lots of memorable quippy lines, and some of the most fun chase scenes in cinema, what more do you want?

My pick: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - what a boring slog of a movie.

Maybe I’ll give it a try - I’ve been a stranger in a strange land but I still think it’s pretentious bull shite.

Star Wars. Seemed silly to me but clearly a massive success.

Blues Brothers Raiders of the Lost Arc Apocalypse Now

Ok..I was about to post that their are some miserable people in this thread if they don’t see the greatness of some of the films mentioned. But you sir have topped them all.

First of all, Raiders is the most perfect film ever made. Tremendous actors, action packed fun story, great score, highly rewatchable.
Secondly, Blues. Brothers is great just on the soundtrack alone.

Pick your Sonic sir and name the date and time of your demise.

The thread has become just a list of popular movies people don’t love. It’s supposed to be movies that are inexplicably popular.

And Pretty Woman

And Out of Africa

And as previously mentioned The English Patient

I'm seeing a trend here. The movies women love are eye-opening when you really analyze it.

Three Billboards in Hibbing, Minnesota.

One of the worst films ever made.

Again, I understand your mindset, but once you get it, you see it for the masterpiece it is. It does initially come across as pretentious bullshite, but once it clicks, it’s one of the greatest films ever made.
