Old bump but gave a new/modern mystery a try for the first time in years.

The Fourth Monkey Killer was all over my booktok for some reason and I saw in goodreads I had some family members reading it. 4.25 stars on goodreads as well so figured i'd give it a shot.

New mystery novels blow :lol: I am just blown away how so many people can be blown away by this novel. It was clear this guy watched Dexter, Silence of the Lambs and Seven one month and then wrote this book right after. In theory, that sounds good but maybe try and pull from some other areas too. This thing was so full of cliche's preposterous plot points at some parts I found myself laughing out loud. I don't know if people are just very easily entertained or have never read great books before but I just don't get it.

I tested my theory from the OP and read a classic right before this as well. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie. The whole book is like putting together a puzzle and the last chapter is Poirot inserting that last puzzle piece for the reader to solve the crime.

The Fourth monkey Killer spent quite literally half the book on the killers back story. Half of the book is from his diary telling about his childhood. It's supposed to tell you why he is doing the things he is doing and all the while spending 200 pages developing the character all it did was tell an absolutely ridiculous backstory that only created more questions. Meanwhile you have Agatha Christie who gives us zero backstory on Poirot or the killer and both are infinitely more intriguing than any character in the completely character driven mystery.

Created the OP in 2022 after an infuriating modern mystery and here I am again in 2026 pissed off again after another one. I'll check back with this genre in 2030 and hope for a different result.

Absolutely. I'm in the minority with this but I like it better than Top Gun. Almost a perfect popcorn flick. It's between this and A Few Good Men for my favorite Tom Cruise movie.

Man that could have been a bad arse episode if the white privilege and being black is so much harder stuff throughout the episode. On it's own it was a very good origin episode but the motive and attitude of the mom was just tiresome.

John's story himself without his mom was freaking great television but man they were preaching. The black girl writer after the show basically said she wanted to preach.

Unless they are just trying to make her the villain. What was the privilege Hal had that didn't cause him to have any fear? How would she know he hasn't had any reason in his life to have fear? Simply because he was white I guess.

1.5 episodes in and I’ve never wanted to pulverize someone like I do this John Paul dude. What an absolute trash human being.

It's all over tik tok/instagram/facebook. Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it's not there. And have you not seen retailers dropping them, items being pulled from the shelves and online and shows getting cancelled? Do you not think that is backlash or something? Retailers didn't watch that and immediately say they were dropping them. They dropped them because of the online reaction.

i hadn't posted in that thread in a month but no surprise the last couple comments are from the usual suspect bitching. And the person that posted box office numbers is the resident box office numbers poster for the board that does that for every movie. So no surprise that guy posted tweets about The Odyssey setting record. That's movie news.

To a normal person, the add isn't offensive enough. But social media outrage isn't normal. After the add the next day I saw a post of a woman saying her husband was returning his Callaway clubs. I thought that's dumb, let me click on the comments to see people roasting her husband for being a puss. Nope, it was like 500 comments of people cheering them on and said they were doing the same. Since then half my algorithm is Callaway/Good Good outrage that got worse by the day.

Neither of those started or kept the social media fire going. They simply responded to it. Hell after the Good Good's 2nd apology I think I read an article with the PGA Tour responding that they weren't too impressed with Good Good's apology but they were encouraged since then. The tone was very much "Yea they F'd up but it'll be alright."

Target and Dicks cancelling them is not surprising. Target is like the trans lingerie store and Dicks stopped selling AR's after a school shooting and then removed guns completely out of their stores. Those companies getting behind this outrage is not surprising. But once big brands like that start dropping Good Good to set an example then it forces the PGA Tours hand. They were clearly going to stick with them if the storm died down but it didn't, so everyone is crashing out on them now. Even The Golf Channel initially just postponed The Big Break a week to remove Golf Galaxy/Dicks from the show. The outrage got worse, and they cancelled the whole season.

If a code red was called then the PGA Tour or The Golf Channel would have been the first to drop them.
