That's ONLY because the schools (through donors) couldn't "legally" pay players and didn't have to. But it would be a bad look for the school to pocket the huge profits, so they invested in long term "facilities" as recruiting capital. However, given the choice, the players would MUCH prefer to have the money rather than a place to take a nap in the locker room or a video game in the lounge. How do we know that? You don't hear much talk about this or that programs lavish new facility upgrades anymore because just like in pro football, which often have less opulent facilities than major college programs, the players don't give a damn about the facilities. They want a share of the money they are helping generate.

Are you talking about schoolwork? For the majority of major conf. players they would rather not have to meet academic requirements. However, in this particular line of work the players are required to perform to certain academic standards in order to be eligible to play. So it behooves the school/program just as much as it does the players to maintain the eligibility requirements. THAT is why the schools go to great lengths to make sure the players maintain the academic standards. The coaches don't truly give a shite if the players graduate at all. They just need them eligible to play. It's kind of like a profession that requires a professional license and requirements to maintain that license. Unless self employed, often time the employer pays the employee's fees to maintain that license. It's not because the employer is benevolent. It's because they want to ensure the employee is eligible to perform work for them.

But in college football it's supposed to be an avoidance of having to pay for eligibility requirements (i.e. school) the players would rather not incur in the first place and "nice amenities" the players would gladly forego in exchange for a lucrative salary...which they are showing to you now.

If you can't/won't share the revenue with the players (meaning an equitable share, not a diminished % because you also have to share the revenue the football program generates with the backup goalie on soccer program that loses money), then the least you could do is not force them to incur the costs of eligibility (i.e. school) and give them room/board. Why? Because if you didn't the star WR from a low income single parent home could not afford to play college football. Coaches/teams would then be left with 5'9 170 lb Chad from Cristian Brothers Academy who runs a 4.7 40 at WR as opposed to 6'1, 195 lb Markel from Miami who runs a 4.3 because Chad's parents can afford the eligibility requirements.
