How would teams from years ago do in today’s NFL?

One of my more unpopular opinions is that the 2007 Patriots would be lucky to go 4-13 or 3-14 in today’s NFL, and almost any earlier NFL team than that would go 0-17.
People greatly underestimate how much the NFL has improved over the years. Like I think I read that there was only one NFL player 40 years ago who weighed over 300 pounds. And NFL players have gotten vastly faster over the years while getting bigger. And the coaching schemes have gotten much more complex over time.
Like look at NFL kickers over the years. The best kickers in the NFL used to struggle to make 50 yard FGs. It’s likely that other positions have improved as much as kickers have, but it’s not apparent because they’re playing against opponents that have also improved.
And if you want to talk about rules pro day being wimpier. Well, part of that is because guys today would literally be killed if the same hits that were allowed years ago were still allowed. The players are so much stronger than they used to be, so the hits they impose on opponents would be a lot stronger as well.

One of the most prolific offenses in recent memory, game changes to favor offense and penalize defenses. You think said team would be shite. You don’t know ball.

Look at the weight of the players on the 2006 Patriots. And look at how uncomplicated the Patriot’s schemes were compared to today’s offenses and defenses.

An all time retarded take. Every one of the 2007 Pats OL was 300+. As for the defensive line, Vince Wilfork wasn't exactly undersized. 2007 Randy Moss would school any CB in the NFL right now. Tom Brady started a playoff game less than 5 years ago.
You act like that's a team from the 1970s whose biggest lineman was 240 pounds. The 2007 Patriots would win 14 games with the 2026 Patriots schedule.

Picking the 2007 Patriots was a bad comparison
Brady, Moss, and Welker would be the top QB and WR combo in the league today.

Well Brady won Super Bowl MVP and was second-team All-Pro only 5 years ago while in his mid-40s, so…

Depends on the rules; if you're playing under 70s rules, you could grab receivers and drive quarterbacks into the ground. I think the Steelers would do well and I hated the Steelers

Teams 20-25 years ago would do very well if they operated under the CBA from that period. They'd go 4-0 in September. It's now just an accepted fact because of limited practice/contact time that the first month of the season is dogshit. False starts, delay of games, poor tackling, blown coverages, etc. Especially poor tackling.

84 niners, 85 bears, 86 giants, 88-89 niners 91 redskins would all do very well in todays NFL.

You’re just getting ridiculous. All of those teams would go 0-17 today. Honestly, they’d lose something like 77-0 or 84-0 against today’s NFL teams if the opponent felt like running up the score that much.

Then why are teams routinely hitting 60+ yard field goals today? Even a 55 yard field goal was almost unheard of in 2007.

Montana’s 49ers would beat the arse of every team in the league right now. Rice, Taylor, Jones, Roger Craig, Rathman. And the D led by Lott. It’d be nasty.

Wasn't there a thread here recently that lamented the poor development of college players the last 5 or so years?

80s 49ers teams would do well.
Rice and Taylor would feast with current DPI rules and Montana would be picking defenses apart considering how untouchable QBs are today.

look at their shoulder pads
BIG shoulder pads teams would struggle today - think 1986 Giants
smaller shoulder pads teams would be fine today - like your 2007 Pats
the smaller pads means they have shifted to the faster version of the game and moved away from the brute force game - the early 2000s saw the shift to tighter jerseys and more speed and range of motion

If they could play by the rules from the 80’s those SF, Giants and Bears defense would kill today’s offenses. Go watch film of Ronnie Lott lighting WR’s up over the middle.
