This can't be a real thread.

You watched Drake Maye make it to a Super Bowl and question what 07 Brady would’ve done?

And modern 350 lb tackles would be useless if they couldn't use their hands. Offensive line blocking techniques are completely different now

Mike Curtis, Nitschke, Butkus would be banned for life for uncleating people
they didn’t have “a toe” “a knee” a fuggin “strained hamstring” back in the day
they strapped it up and mauled people
ask Johnny U what roughing the passer felt like…

I would love to see old players in today's rules.

i think the smaller quicker defenses would struggle against two tight fullback power running teams. They are built to cover and tackle in space today. You kinda already see the running game coming back today. Ebb and flow

look at their shoulder pads

BIG shoulder pads teams would struggle today - think 1986 Giants

smaller shoulder pads teams would be fine today - like your 2007 Pats

What an odd analysis, it's like you worked for a department store back in the day selling shoulder pads to '80s housewives. The 1986 Giants defense would murder quarterbacks today.

this guy fricking serious?

Uh, yeah. The NFL is a LOT more advanced than even 10 years ago, let alone 18-19 years ago. And I'm just talking about tactics/scheme, not even the development of players in terms of size/speed/physical talent

Montana’s 49ers would beat the arse of every team in the league right now.

No way.

Their OL would be dominated and the offense was too dinosaur to deal with NFL defenses today.

Remember the Tampa-Oakland SB with Gruden where the Bucs destroyed the Raiders b/c they literally knew the offense? That would be modern Ds against a simplistic offense from the 80s.

Then you have to think about how the OL would be absolutely manhandled by modern DLs.

quote:

And the D led by Lott. It’d be nasty.

The dinosaur D would have the same schematic issues as the offense, but possibly even more. And you still have the same issue with the lines.

If they could play by the rules from the 80’s those SF, Giants and Bears defense would kill today’s offenses.

And the 80s offenses would be pretty much guaranteed to be shut out. It doesn't just work one way.

Even if you want to play this game and assume the 80s D would have some edge (it wouldn't, but I'll play the game), modern kickers win it for the modern team.

These threads are vapid. If you transported teams to the future they would get the 30 or 40 years of advancements in everything, too.

Imagine thinking the 2007 Patriots would be lucky to go 4-13 or 3-14 in 2026.

That's the typical cope from the "everything was better in the past" population who can't discuss the actual subject at hand, so they try to spin it

When we talk about the 2007 Pats "in today's NFL" then it is about the 2007 Pats, not some fantasy extrapolation

That's easily a bit much, but they wouldn't be anywhere near undefeated.

Moss was a 1 of 1/unicorn but defenses now are much better at stopping those sorts of players than in 2007. Modern defenses have largely solved the chunk play issue and the Pats would have to do what teams now are having to do, dink and dunk down the field.

The bigger issue would be the Pats' D against much more advanced offenses. 2007 was before the NFL took major steps forward in the 2010s. That D was built to stop 2007 running games. Big, slow LBs and lack of coverage in the secondary. They were a complicated defense....for 2007 but wouldn't be anything special in 2026. They would struggle every game to stop good 2026 passing offenses

Patriots dink and dunked back then. Defenses aren’t that much more complicated than they were 20 years ago. It’s 11 on 11, teams just play more zone now, there’s nothing complicated about any of it. Teams just keep more safeties back, some teams were doing this back then also, just more do it now. There are more 3 safety looks now, 07 Patriots would just dink and dunk and run it more when safeties were playing deep. There hasn’t been some major breakthrough on defenses in the last 20 years

Their 250 pound offensive linemen would get absolutely trampled by modern defensive linemen though. I think this is what OP was getting at and I think he has a point. He just completely ruined his post by using the 2007 Patriots as his initial comparison.

Tom Brady was as good at this as any QB who has ever lived. No one was better at just taking what the defense gave him than Brady. It was not unusual for the Patriots to have a RB catch 50 passes in a season. Danny Woodhead did it, Shane Vereen did it, James White did it several times, etc...

I think the 2007 Pats could hold their own today, but going all the way back to the ‘80s and prior you’re talking about a major mismatch schematically and in the trenches.

Offenses running 21 personnel under center with OL averaging 275 lbs. are going to have a hard time scoring.
