To anyone who thinks it's a stoner sport I dare you to go play and try to shoot even or better. If you're at a decent course it will take you years to consistently shoot under par.
Okay but in real golf most people will NEVER shoot under par even at the worst course in their city

As an avid disc golfer this has been a fun read.
The 2 extremes in here are hilarious.
No i dont think disc golf is harder than ball golf, but it also isnt just as easy as throwing a frisbee straight.

I played today.
Not easy at all but it’s not nearly as hard as golf

I have been thinking about a way to quantify disc golf's difficulty level.
I have said before playing initially it is far less frustrating than golf once you have played each past the beginner level the practice needed to improve is damn near equal.
Everyone keep talking about shooting par in each sport. I hit on something that may illustrate how hard it is to become a seriously goof DG player.
The pro disc golf world championships just wrapped up this weekend and is almost certainly the genesis of this thread.
Worlds is a 5 round event played on 2 different courses that usually have significantly different characters. The winning score was -39 so an average of roughly 8 under for each round. There is a cut for the final round so some play 4 and some play 5 rounds. Out of 207 entrants only 85 of them played under par for 4 rounds. The majority of those that played at or over par have been playing for over a decade and a handful of them are touring pros that make their livelihood playing DG.
I understand why people that have never played and those that have only played short rec length courses designed with beginners in mind think the sport can be mastered in a couple of months I thought the same thing after my first few rounds. I was quickly humbled playing my first 7000ft "real" course and humiliated when I played a round with a couple of 1000+ rated players.
It really isn't a hard thing for an athletic person to pick up a baseball and throw it 60 1/2 feet to a catcher. It is a different matter for them to get to the point they can fan even good HS batters on a consistent basis.

Nice avocation but hardly in the ‘important’ sports category…

I have played both casually. Initially throwing a disc straight is easier than hitting a golf ball straight. But WHEN you hit a golf ball straight, you probably come closer to pro driving distance than you would disc golf distance.
I think most casuals have only played vanilla short DG courses and assume that is typical. There are some crazy difficult courses. While I have never played US Open golf courses, I would bet against their level of difficulty delta vs easy golf courses being any greater than the diff with DG courses.
Both have pros and cons. Golf will have the pristine look, while DG is more rustic, but both can have beautiful places to spend an afternoon.

if anyone is interested in disc golf in the DFW area I'll take you out one day and teach you how to play. It's so much fun baws. It's only going to get more popular.

The flaw in your argument is no gives a shite about “real” courses that apparently only people that are really into it know about. No one is trying to compete with the best players in the world.
All people give a shite about is the average course that they can play locally with people they can actually go play with.
It’s extremely hard to compete with the best in the world in any sport:
To get to be a average player on an average course, golf is a lot harder then disc golf. Which could actually be an advantage for disc golf.
I like playing golf better. But my friends don’t have the patience to get good enough where it’s even fun. They will go play disc golf though

Brought the wife out to Canton, Tx a few years ago for the Big Flea Market. Dropped her off and I decided to run out to Rockwall just outside Dallas to play the John H course over there.
That was a fun course.
Also had to pick up a bunch of beer since I didn't know Tyler was dry. Lol
Also played in Tyler where they had 3 course on the site. Also fun courses.

What's your definition of average?
I play disc Golf once a weekend during covid. If I played a really tough course (for the area, none of the courses in my area would be considered tough for pros) I would average anywhere between Even to +20 depending on the day and wind conditions.
I played golf once in three years, went out to the course and shot a 42 on the front 9 and had to go home after that. Since then I've played 2-3 times and probably shot about 15- 20 over each time on some pretty nice DFW courses.
Eta: Played golf most of my life but stopped playing when I was 23 (I'm 31 now) and Since 23 I've played golf maybe 5 times. Went back out there a month ago at a DFW course and shot the 42. I'm also pretty athletic. I'm not saying disc golf is harder than ball golf but the Disc Golf courses aren't near as hard as the golf courses because of lack of money and effort put into them. Your local parks and rec doesn't give a frick about a disc golf course because it doesn't make them money.
If you go to a CHAMPIONSHIP level DG course which would be just your best golf course in your city, you would shoot 40 over on your first time out. I guarantee it.

Man I have gone down a Disc Golf rabbit hole since you started this thread, to the point that I am watching whole tournaments on YouTube
Never played it before but thinking about getting some equipment and trying it out even though I'm sure the courses in Baton Rouge suck arse.

Once you get addicted it's over. You will plan your weekend around disc golf
Try and go out there with a couple of friends. DG is fun solo but a blast if you're out there competing with similar skilled players.

Didn’t the winner of the Championship level PDGA tour throw like -39 during the tournament?
I assume That was at a championship level course?
