Go play a championship level course in DG and then play a championship level course in golf. I bet your scores will be similar.

It depends on what you are using them for. Destroyers are GREAT forehand discs because they are fairly stable-over stable.

If you are a new player I'd suggest by picking up a fairway driver nothing above a 10 speed because your arm can't throw fast enough to actually use a Distance Driver.

Avenger SS from Discraft is a good starter disc because it's so UNDERSTABLE you will get more distance out of it. If you throw an Avenger SS and it starts to turn into a roller, you need to switch discs.

Leopards
Tee birds from innova.

Got anymore questions?

Interesting suggestions but I'm on the other side of the advice.

I advise newbies to get UNDERstable discs because their natural tendancy is too much hyzer. throwing a Valkerie, daedulus or Beast allows players to straighten out their shots more effectively.

I throw destroyers on backhand hyzer shots but get more distance and straighter flights from Latitude Ballista Pro's

Daedulus is my goto for anhyzer (righthanded backhand, right turning) shots but have been messing around with a Hades recently

My favorite approach disc is a Cryztal "Get Freaky" Zone

There's a lot to say about having good technique. I'm in the process of reworking my drives to eliminate a bad habit. I'm starting to average 400' throws when I previous topped out at 375'

I bet my arse it wouldn’t take me more than a month to be comfortably inside 18 strokes of par, though.

I am sorry but you are likely very far off. I have played both games for decades and taught dozens of people to play disc golf. What you suggest is likely true for a 4000-4500 ft course which is analogous to a par 3 chip and put. Start talking about a 7000-7500 foot average course like PdF whites and you won't sniff +18 for months unless you are a phenom. It is unlikely you will get anything more than 250ft drives after a month, basically no one does.

There is zero question that DG is less frustrating for the beginner but you have to admit you are talking about something you have never done and have zero real-world frame of reference. Throwing a Frisbee and playing disc golf are remarkably different things, even long time Ultimate players have a pretty big transition. They are literally two very different kinds of discs.

The other thing that has to be brought into focus is the way particular casual short courses rate par. The short ones are notoriously high for the casual user's ego. Using the SSE (scratch score equivalent) is much more accurate. The old Greenwood course is an excellent example it was a par 54 but the SSE was 45 which is more indicative of the real par rating. The new Highland layout is a par 68 on the yellow basket signs but the SSE and tournament play par is 58. Courses designed with championship-level tees are more in line with SSE a SELA example of that is PdF in Mererro.

Only disc I have ever aced with- PMcbeth Zone- about 3 months ago Cedar Hills- Coyote- hole number 4 I believe.

My go to for an upshot is a zone or atlas depending on the angle I have.

Go to driver is generally a Nuke SS or Halo Destroyer for forehands, Anax or Esp Nuke for backhands.

Putter- Luna all the way best putter on the market.

3-4 months ago started playing again and I've been using destroyers. Don't know how I like them so far. Any good suggestions for discs I should buy? Been using the cheap DX plastics for now, but I plan on getting nicer discs once I get better

If you can actually throw a Destroyer and get it to fly and not noob hyzer then you can indeed through a 12 speed disc and should be able to consistently throw 400. If you can't throw 400 or more you need to disc down. Without seeing your form I it is hard to say where to go but gut says try working with a 7 speed like a Teebird in Star or Champion plastic and slowly work up from there. The slowly moving up in speed is what every DGer will say but likely didn't do at least initially, almost everyone of us has a stack of 10-13 speed discs we tried to throw when starting out.

Again not sure how good your form was when you quit playing but my general recs are:

Find a putter you like and stick with it. Try at least one beaded and unbeaded. When you decide on one get 10 and a practice basket and PRACTICE. Just like golf the short game is what makes your score. Unless you have a high speed pro type putt I suggest a disc with a fairly neutral flight not heavy on the fade. Pros tend to use a putter with at least a 3 fade, most 850 and below rated players do better with a 1 or zero fade putter. Most people like fairly grippy plastic for their putting putters like DX or KC/JK/R-Pro from Innova as an example. I prefer slicker plastic for dry rounds but I am an oulier. I only switch to grippy putters when it is raining.

Do NOT overlook the utility of throwing putters, they are the friend of beginners and pros alike.

A lot of people only throw a single mid-range mold often at different levels of wear (disc become more understable with wear). I throw a wide variety of mid-molds from neutral (Mako 3*) to very stable like the Caiman or Deflector.

My two favorite beginner/novice disc rec are an Aviar and a Mako3. First fairway driver would be either a Leopard or Teebird.

Another point to consider when moving up through disc speed is not to discount buying the first faster disc in a lighter weight. It is easier to get release speed on a disc 10-20 grams lighter than max weight. The negative is they aren't as reliable in wind. When you can get a good flight out of the lighter disc move up to or near max weight.

but I am solely a forehand and tomahawk thrower,

You sound like a former Ultimate or baseball player. The issue for most forehand dominant players is they usually end up with elbow issues unless their form is PERFECT (like Scott Stokely). Really work on your form. I limit power forehands to lines that are absolutely needed for. FYI you can develop a backhand with work, I have seen plenty of players that couldn't develop a good forehand, hell the current World Champion doesn't have a good one but I have yet to see someone that couldn't develop a backhand though former Ultimate players do struggle for a while.

* the Mako 3 is a disc I recommend to all beginners as it is likely the easiest disc to throw laser straight, get it is Champion or Star. It will also hold any line you release it on so it is a good form evaluator letting you know if you are releasing hyzer or anhyzer when you are meaning to throw flat. When thrown flat it also tends to land dead flat and reduces ground play. Ground play is very useful when you understand how to read and control it but landing flat is often useful for beginners.

I’ve played about a similar amount of golf & disc golf. Decent at both but nowhere near scratch level. Enjoyment is often based on who I’m playing with & course/weather.

Golf gets nod on a nice course and bonus if lucky enough to play for free in scramble format. Although disc golf with the more minor but appreciative party favors as mentioned in OP is big plus.
