Ed deserves credit for assembling arguably the greatest college team ever. But when you are talking legacy, you have to include that his program’s fall from the top was farther than anyone’s in the history of college football. It’s part of the story. His legacy is very similar to Gene Chezik.

Frick this thread talking about Saban leaving a legacy at LSU while he’s been making his own legacy at Bama.

Brian Kelly will have the greatest legacy at LSU

The question was about legacy, not how the teams performed on the field while the were HC. Miles' legacy is vacated wins, perving on young women, being the "mad hatter". None of that is great.

Legacy is what he left behind that endures...

I would say Miles' legacy is our spoiled, arrogant fanbase.

Prior to him, as I noted, fans were happy with 8 or 9 win regular seasons. Being ranked (at all) was a success. Many "alltime great" games were close losses against good teams.
Even Saban received this perception from the fans; the 2003 title was amazing but a total surprise, and the base was still happy with him in 2004 when he went 9-3.

Miles- after he reeled off 3 straight 11 win seasons (and a natty) to start his tenure, our fanbase changed. Winning seasons weren't good enough anymore, you had to win BIG. People bitched about 'boring wins', people bitch to this day about the 2011 season like it was some disaster; while the reality of it is that it was easily one of the Top Ten seasons in our history. Only the Natty years were definitively better.

So again, Miles' legacy is a fanbase that now expects and demands titles, not just a "good" year. It wasn't that way before he came, but it is now.

Your one and only correct answer is Nick Saban.

He has left a legacy not only for LSU, but for all of college football in general and for SEC football in particular.

He is a household name nationwide, while the rest of the nation probably has no idea who your numbers one and two even are.

How can Saban not be number one?

Different ERA and time, but Curley Hallman for all that a major college football coach SHOULD NOT BE!

Diarnodo for bringing back the magic and from there LSU over the last 25 going on 30 years is one of the premiere athletic programs in the world.

Joe Burrow recruited Jamar Chase?

Joe Burrow recruited Derek Stingley?

Joe Burrow recruited and signed Grant Delpit?

Joe Burrow recruited Patrick Queen?

What about Klavon Chaisson, Jacob Phillips, Jacoby Stevens, Damien Lewis, Cade York, Sahdiq Charles and Thad Moss?

Joe Burrow convinced Dave Aranda to not go to A&M when they backed up the brinks truck?

Joe Burrow never steps a foot on LSUs campus without Ed Oregron, never forget that Jimbo Fisher and Tom Herman didn't even try to recruit Joe.

It was LSU and Cincinnati.

You can hate Ed for the way it ended, but to say he's not responsible for 2019 is either just a flat out lie or pure ignorance.

The question was which coach left us with the greatest legacy. Do you think a spoiled, arrogant fanbase is great?

Nick Saban. He put the fence up around Louisiana and convinced the best to come to LSU. For decades now, recruits, fans, and players know LSU can contend for titles with LA talent. LSU is the only in-state power house and it was important to get the state talent to come to LSU. The coaches following Saban benefited from what Saban did for state recruiting.

It's easy to bash Coach O but that 2019 team, he had a lot to with it's success. He got Burrow here, after seeing the lackluster 2018 offense he got Joe Brady and the offense was completely different and not too mention the talent and recruiting he did was amazing. After that, he got the big head and was incapable of replacing what had left in terms of coaching.

Saban let us all down with his traitor-esque move elsewhere then BAMA! THAT is his legacy,

Dietzel was an incredible coach that put together the initial LSU standard.
When it's all said and done I believe current coach Kelly will be the answer.

Why don’t y’all stop bashing the man.

And give him some credit or just turn in your LSU fandom!

The man put it all together & if you don’t know that you’re either ignorant, dumb or never played a down of competitive football in your life.

He FOUND & recruited JOE BRADY
HE TALKED JOE BURROW into coming to LSU
HE found that stud kicker we had from some northeast no-name school.
He brought in 1-2 OL transfers

And when I say “he found”, it means him & the staff he put together did it collectively.

Bebe has a network of coaching contacts that love the man & all you village idiots need to STFU & leave it alone,

The man ASSEMBLED THE BEST TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL.

No single QB can do it ALONE. I don’t think you realize how stupid you sound, like I said, you must have not EVER PLAYED a significant down of football in your life.

As for me, I actually coached the LSU football camps under Nick Saban, so I think I can weigh in on this topic. I also did it for Auburn when Tuberville was there.

Props to Coach O aka Bebe, since everyone of you Behe bashers always have to bring him in and insult the man.

Btw, he would pounce on you like a rag doll, shake your hand and put you to the ground. Tired of you idiots!

Arnsparger - he shifted the emphasis to winning championships and not just getting a bowl bid and beating rivals.

3) Nick Saban

This is the only answer to this question. Sleeping Giant until he came to LSU. The reason the last 3 Coaches have won the National Championship is because of him.

It’s Nick Saban. It could have been Arnsparger, but he left us with Archer as coach. I would place Dietzel #2. Charlie Mac was a better coach than Orgeron, but he could neve climb the mountain, so I would put him last.

1. Saban
2. Dietzel
3. Les Miles
4. Orgeron
5. McClendon

The whole “he lost to UAB” is worn out and freaking retarded to even mention. The guy brought us a National championship and was 2 points and a dropped Hail Mary away from being 11-1 in 2004. He also lost to ULM at Alabama. Think that tarnishes his legacy there???? And LSU was ranked #2 in the polls across the board prior to the bowl games in 2003. The talk was “who should LSU be playing for the national championship USC or Oklahoma”, as THEY were the question mark being both flip flopped ranked #1 and #3 in the polls. If you wanna blame the dumb arse BCS computers for the chaos, then so be it. But don’t claim LSU backed into the NCG.

All left a measurable legacy but the most significant one was Saban. He set the benchmark and showed how the program should operate to have sustainability.

the depths people will sink to not give Ed any credit whatsoever is astounding

Dismissing Orgeron's part in the 2019 team is no more ridiculous than listing Orgeron' legacy as more significant than several other Coaches.
