Smoke went to SLU? He was on Ponchatoula HS coaching staff late 80s early 90s

I went to school with Billy. 1 year behind him at Sherwood Jr High, and 2 years behind at Broadmoor High School. (I spent two years in 8th grade). I remember in 1997 me and my buddies were in the Sherwood Junior High locker room seeing who could clean and press the most weight. Not many jr High kids were into weight training at that time. We put all of the weights we had on the bar (130 lbs) and everyone was struggling to press it over head. 9th grade Billy walks in and says he has never lifted weights in his life but wants to try. He pressed it overhead with relative ease. First lesson for me in genetics.

Sorry, meant to say 1977, not 1997. I’m getting old haha.

Jose Vargas was from the Dominican Republic. He drove a red Riviera with a white vinyl top.

Definitely some huge bidding wars back then between aTm and LSU for players from Louisiana. Start athlete Johnny Hector from New Iberia comes to mind, who was considered the one of if not the best high school athlete in the nation.
The stories of Cannon Sr. rolling some state legislators on the down low on the levee were all over. It was a lot easier to hide coercion from judges back in the day.

Have y'all ever seen the 30for30 on the pony express at SMU? They openly call out A&M for being incredibly dirty. On of the guys talks about how all A&M recruits somehow got a new Trans Am when they committed to the Faggies. They called it the Trans A&M.
One of the funny stories out of that was Eric Dickerson receiving the keys to his Trans Am from A&M and promptly getting into it and driving to Dallas to ink his LOI to SMU. His rationale was very simple: what exactly was A&M going to do? Call a cop?

If I remember Pony Excess correctly, he wanted to go to SMU and Aggy showed up with the car. He felt obligated to go there and SMU asked "who are they gonna tell?"

Also saw John Williams driving a bright red 5-series BMW.
I'll second this. Saw Williams in the red Bimmer, also saw him in a Bimmer convertible on Highland.
Emory Ballard and Jackie Sherill weren't the only ones. The whole SWC was like AAA NFL. The running joke was you had to take a pay cut, when you got drafted by the NFL.

There was no way that he was going to LSU and play in his dad's shadow....

Billy Cannon Jr was a good running back at Broadmoor.
The LSU coach was Jerry Stovall, who wanted young Cannon to play defensive end. Father Cannon couldn't believe it! Some of his former Houston Oiler teammates were Aggies and they told the Cannons that A&M was the best place for Billy Jr. A&M signed him and then played Billy Cannon Jr. at linebacker. Billy Cannon Sr's relationship with McClendon had nothing to do with Billy Cannon Jr going to A&M. There were hard feelings for awhile between Stovall and Cannon Sr. But Cannon Sr later campaigned for Stovall to get into the College Football Hall of Fame.

He’s an administrator with St Tammany School Board. He looks the same as 35 years ago. He was my BREC quarterback and my high school quarterback. He went to Southeast Junior High and I went to Westdale Junior and Elton Veals was a year older than me. He’s still around town driving trucks.
And yeah to the other poster the dates don’t add up. We were a year behind Billy Jr. and I believe he is still with Salco here.

Nice stories from you and Topisaw. I went to ASC and played against both. 40+ years ago now.

I was a classmate of Billy Cannon - same age - and that is the understanding that we all had concerning his Istrouma tenure. My brother was older than me and lived in BR all his life after leaving high school - he was a big fan of Cannon, but told me he was in serious trouble in HS - something about 'rolling drunks' was the only specific I recall.
Saw these guys quite a lot - Warren Rabb lived just above me in the Married Student's Apartments - the whole gang were guests there a lot. As far as I knew they were much more docile at college than their HS reputations. .

I can tell you for a fact that Jack Lamabe was still recruiting Billy Cannon Jr. to play baseball at LSU in late May 1980. That is when me and my LSU roommate my went on our recruiting trip to LSU. We went to lunch at Phil’s Oyster Bar and it was us, Coach Lamabe and Billy Cannon Sr. and part of the conversation was about Jr. playing baseball at LSU. I can’t recall football ever being discussed.

I believe Warren Rabb went to Baton Rouge High. I went to school with his kids. Wonder if he’s still duck hunting.
Who else was on that Istrouma team? Earl Phillips, BL Fairchild? Did big Donald Oatley go to Istrouma?
