I think it was a combo of things mentioned in this thread. Something not mentioned though....I played little league baseball with a bunch of kids that lived in the broadmoor area. I would later attend Broadmoor junior (at the time) now middle school. Anyway I was still in elementary at the time but our coach was a friend of Juniors. He came to practice one day cause we had this kid on the team everyone called smoke. for his age he threw fricking smoke trust me. anyway our dumbass young coach brings Billy Jr out there to face this kid. kid threw a pitch Billy hit that thing atleast 500 ft. we run track the thing down, I kid you not Billy Jr hit the ball so hard the damn thing was lopsided damn that's been atleast 38-39 years ago. damn.
Considering 38 years ago would have been 1978 and BCJ would have been about 17 years old, your story makes little sense.

Carruth was on LSU's radar until Bo Rein died in the plane crash.

Really? BCJ was in HS I guess at 17 yrs of age and we were a bunch of little leaguers. we didn't go to school with him. Why would I make up a story like that?
Oh and Bucky Richardson was on that little league team too. Our coach is the one who named him fricking Bucky.

I guess you have to ask yourself that one. 500 foot home run, lopsided ball, off of an 8-year old.

Anyone else remember BC Jr jumping out of the 2nd floor window at Broadmoor, "just to see what would happen"?

danfraz - your post brings back some great memories of long summer nights at Sharp Road park in the late 70s and early 80s. I can't vouch for the BC Jr. story, but I think I remember the pitcher you were referring to - are his initials RK?

Paul Ott Carruth went to Parklane Academy in McComb, MS. I went to JC in Summit with a bunch of guys that played with him. They all told me he was all Bama and wanted to play for Bear. I met him at a bar called Cowboy McCool's there in Summit one night. He was a pompous arse but then 'everybody' knew him and ogled him anyway. Funny thing was the girl he was with was chatting with me while he walked around the place. When they were leaving she turned around to me and said "call me." (I didn't even have her number, smh). Found out later she broke up with him a few weeks later. Friend told me she just went out with him because he was 'famous'. LOL True story.....

Cannon graduated Broadmoor in 1979. Bucky Richardson graduated Broadmoor in 1985.

That would be one Kevin Darouse. A great guy to this day.
That couldn’t have been Kevin. I graduated with Smoke Darouse at Tara in 1981. But, Smoke certainly always was a great guy.

No, that wasn't it. The commissioner wouldn't void a pick because Billy said Billy Jr wasn't playing baseball. That happens every year when a kid tells major league teams that he intends to go to college, so don't bother drafting him.
The difference was that Billy said his son wouldn't play for ANYBODY BUT the Yankees. Not sure why that would be a problem, but the commissioner apparently thought it was shady dealings between Cannon and the Yankees to fix the draft.

I saw BCJ and Broadmoor play against Istrouma and Elton Veals (a stud running back that went on to break OJ Simpson’s California JC rushing record). Coach Mac was in the stands. BCJ never came off the field...played defense, offense, returned punts, etc. His uniform was almost light brown compared to the rest of Broadmoor’s white unis. He llooked like the biggest guy on his team which looked even more odd on defense because he lined up at deep safety mostly. Anyway, as a tight game was winding down, Istrouma had driven most of the whole field and on a toss sweep to Veals, he was lowering his shoulder and leaving Buccaneers laid out as he was making for the right pylon. Then, Mr. Brownshirt, who had mirrored Veals’ path from across the line of scrimmage, connected with him short of the goal line and laid him out good. Can’t remember if Broadmoor won, but I do remember Veals not coming back in the game. BCJ was a beast but LSU was kind of on a downward trend and Coach Mac didn’t look to be in great health and was plainly on his way out. Still pisses me off, but I kind of understand. Same thing happened years later with Peyton, Archie, and Ole Miss.

I'm not sure of Billy Sr being interested in the Aggies, but he was definitely interested in Ole Miss. He admired Coach Vaught a great deal. He went on a recruiting visit there and was perhaps leaning to the Rebels. The problem was that Billy also wanted to run track and Ole Miss didn't even have a track at the time. He always admired Coach Vaught, though.
On Vaught's 90th birthday, Jake Gibbs and some of the former Ole Miss players went to visit Coach Vaught at the assistant living facility where he was staying. When they got there, they found him in the courtyard, visiting with Billy Cannon, who had gone to Oxford to visit Vaught for his birthday.

Well you are close but not 1985 because I graduated in 1985 from Broadmoor and he was a little younger than me. I do remember having him in Mo Richardson’s AG class though.

The Southwest Conference was an open frontier when it came to paying players under the table. The Pony Express 30 for 30 details how Texas A&M gave Eric Dickerson a Trans Am while he was in high school and he still went to SMU.

The Cannons in the early 70s lived on Sherwood Forest Blvd with a double lot, so their backyard backed up across my street as a kid. I was 2 years older than BCJ. Never forget how much fun as kids we had playing “Smear the Queer” football in the neighborhood. Even back then as a young teen, BCJ was the only kid younger than us we would let play. All it took was one of his bone crushing tackles and a stiff arm trying to tackle him when he was the “queer”. We knew very quickly he was a special athlete. Was actually a quite kid back then that let his play to all the talking.
Can’t blame him for choosing A&M back then. He definitely wanted nothing to do playing in the shadows of his famous Dad. Wanted to carve out his own prominence in both foorptball and baseball. As good as he was a free safety at Broadmoor HS, he was actually considered one of the top HS Baseball SS in the nation. The best 2 sport athlete out of LA his Sr year in HS.
