Looking for older Tigers for some help, why did Billy Cannon Jr go to A&M?
Posted by secfballfan on 6/16/16 at 1:21 pm181
As discussed in my last post (I still want to know if the driver who killed the girl on Indian Mound before 84 MSU game was ever caught?),I am recalling some 70’s-80’s “stuff” but have forgotten details.
I can’t recall (I am short on memory/brains) why Billy Cannon Jr went to A&M rather than LSU. What I do think was the coaching situation was up in the air (Mac retiring) and he also wanted to play outside of Dad footsteps. Not sure if he was good player for Aggies but he was highly recruited. Also, he did not go where his dad went to HS, but BCJ DID have a 91 yard punt return to beat his Dad’s alma mater his senior year on a Halloween night no less! Anyway, I am all ears, look forward to hearing from those who know.

I heard he wanted to play baseball and football so he went to A&M. Not sure why he could not do this at LSU. Also heard the Aggies took him quail hunting, gave him a shotgun and some other benefits on his visit.
This is what I remember from high school which is a long time ago.
PS He went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys so I am thinking he was a pretty good player at A&M. He was a beast in high school.

Best guess to much pressure and the coaching at the time left much to be desired. He was drafted out of A&M in the first round as a LB by the Cowboys, and broke his neck in a preseason game. He recovered well enough to live a normal life, but his football career was finished.
Last I knew, he was a construction foreman for Salco here in BR. But that was quite a few years ago.
I think he graduated from Broadmoor High in Baton Rouge around 1980. He probably didn't want to have to try to fill his dad's shoes as a mythic Heisman winner at LSU.
Keep in mind that Billy Sr. was arrested on July 9, 1983, and didn't exactly have a spotless record in B.R. before that incident either (see his crazy days at Istrouma High), so who knows what other factors figured into Billy Jr.'s decision process.

My dad was Jr's roommate at A&M and I asked him this exact question and he said "probably because we paid more!"

Have y'all ever seen the 30for30 on the pony express at SMU? They openly call out A&M for being incredibly dirty. On of the guys talks about how all A&M recruits somehow got a new Trans Am when they committed to the Faggies. They called it the Trans A&M.

Well the Yankees did draft him in the 1st round out of HS, but the MLB Comissioner voided the contract because Billy Sr. had sent telegrams to all the MLB teams stating he would not be playing baseball so don't waste a pick

Yes, his name is Charles Mullin. He was drunk and got off with probation. It happened in 1984. BTW the girl's name was Courtenay Smoak.

and he didn't want to go to LSU and live in the shadow of his pops. Was really going to anyway being he played LBer but he still carries the name, Billy Cannon, Jr.

In remembrance of Courtenay
The article "Mind the Mounds" quoted an article from the State Times concerning the fatality in 1984. The article said the girl's name was Elizabeth Smoak, which is not exactly correct. The plaque in her honor also is incorrect stating her name as Courtenay Elizabeth.
I would just like to point out that her full name is Elizabeth Courtenay Smoak, and she was always known by Courtenay or Courte.
She was a freshman at LSU and had just turned 18 when she was killed. The driver who killed her was drunk. He wasn't just a student doing things that all of the other students were doing at that time. After he ran over Courtenay and her date, who survived, he parked his car and watched as her date carried her horribly broken body to the campus police station. She never woke up after the accident and died shortly after her family made it to the hospital from Thibodaux. The man who killed her never paid any consequences for his actions. His life remained untouched.
Courtenay was my husband's sister. He was only 13 when she was killed so I only know her through pictures and memories. I thought that her correct name should at least be mentioned.

Trola, etc..This was why I was not sure about driver from indian mounds post...but it has been clarified here..by "The man who killed her never paid any consequences for his actions. His life remained untouched." above had me thinking no one was ever caught...I see they were..

Same reason Shaq's son isn't coming to LSU.

Be careful, buddy. That shite went on everywhere.
When I was at LSU in the mid-80s, I saw Stefond Johnson (basketball) driving through campus in a new 280Z. The week after he got kicked off the team, another LSU player was driving the exact car.
Also saw John Williams driving a bright red 5-series BMW. The dude was from Crenshaw in south-central LA. Doubt his parent(s) bought it for him. I always wondered why a superstar from LA would come to LSU for basketball.
And a buddy of mine worked at a nice men's clothing store in BR. Don Redden came in one night and charged $1000 on a credit card. Wasn't his card.
That stuff went on everywhere back then. Nothing unique about A&M, or us.

I posted the news article a while back but it is no longer on the website. Nothing is really out there about it.

I think it was a combo of things mentioned in this thread.
Something not mentioned though....I played little league baseball with a bunch of kids that lived in the broadmoor area. I would later attend Broadmoor junior (at the time) now middle school.
Anyway I was still in elementary at the time but our coach was a friend of Juniors. He came to practice one day cause we had this kid on the team everyone called smoke. for his age he threw fricking smoke trust me.
anyway our dumbass young coach brings Billy Jr out there to face this kid. kid threw a pitch Billy hit that thing atleast 500 ft. we run track the thing down, I kid you not Billy Jr hit the ball so hard the damn thing was lopsided
damn that's been atleast 38-39 years ago. damn.
thinking about it now, smoke was lucky Jr didnt hit that ball right back at him, woulda killed that 8 year old

It was always said that Billy Cannon Senior was told he was going to play football at LSU or he was going to jail as he had all kinds of problems as a teenager growing up in and going to Istrouma. Fighting, stealing etc...
Junior going to A&M was at least somewhat looked at as a thumb in the eye to LSU.
I played ball with Billy Junior (BREC) and against him (Junior and High School) and I remember chasing him and his cleat caught me in the face between my facemask and about broke my fricking nose. I can see that big arse hoof to this day coming into my vision.
He was good. I heard he was in construction as well but that has been a few years myself. And it was 1980 when he graduated from Broadmoor. Year later Mark Howie graduated and went on to play ball. I heard he overdosed and died some years later.
That was back when Broadmoor had some great athletes.
