re: Looking for older Tigers for some help, why did Billy Cannon Jr go to A&M?

honestly I thought he didn't want to follow his legendary dad. His dad even said something along the lines of "everytime he returns a punt fans will expect him to score a touchdown."
I started LSU in 1980. No offense to young Billy, but I don't recall in my four years anyone saying,"if Billy Cannon,Jr had been here we'd be something!"

I asked Billy Jr. ,why he went to A&M and he told me point blank "because they paid me more". Might've been tongue-in-cheek, might not of been.

thanks, lots of great stuff I never would have found, did find some Wikipedia stuff,
After the Yankees selection was voided, he committed to Texas A&M University to the dismay of LSU fans.[5]also had a publicized incident, after he knocked an A&M cadet to the ground, when he threatened an SMU cheerleader with his sabre.
In those first years his impact was mainly on special teams, until he was switched to outside linebacker as a senior, but even then as a key member of the defense, he still returned kicks and punts. He also practiced baseball.
selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round (25th overall). Eight games into his rookie season, he was a reserve right outside linebacker alternating with Anthony Dickerson, when an existing congenital spinal condition was complicated after he tackled New Orleans Saints running back Wayne Wilson. He was knocked unconscious, suffered damage to two vertebrae near his neck and experienced a brief paralysis of his arms and legs. He never started and appeared in just eight games before this injury forced him to retire
Cannon filed lawsuit claiming negligence by the Cowboys, after he informed them of experiencing numbness in his upper body when making tackles. The team denied ever receiving such claims but settled in 1992.[8]

hurt his neck playing for the Cowboys, was actually kind of a stud for them until that
ETA: to OP, Mac was gone before BCJ got out of HS, I think the unstableness of Bo, no Bo, Jerry, and getting out of BR/ dad's shadow factored in as well

As a follow up to my post earlier in this thread, my dad also texted me this:
"LSU tried to pay him in coupons!"

I do remember when BCJ was being recruited, sky was considered the limit as far as his potential, especially given his pedigree, but I got the feeling that not many thought we(LSU,) ever had a realistic shot at getting him

Yep, happened during a Dallas vs Saints game. May have been a pre season game.
ETA, was not preseason.

I still want to know if the driver who killed the girl on Indian Mound before 84 MSU game was ever caught?
I think that was answered previously in your earlier post after you had logged off.

why Billy Cannon Jr went to A&M rather than LSU
There have been rumours that Billy Sr. always wanted to go to A&M, but he had to go to LSU instead because he had too many legal issues to deal with in Baton Rouge stemming from at least one arrest while he was at Istrouma H.S.
His son probably just didn't want to have to follow his legacy at LSU, but some people were also mad at Billy Sr. around that time because they felt that he was one of the main people who ran McClendon off from LSU (honestly, most people were ready for McClendon to retire, but they also wanted him to go out a little more gracefully than he did...Billy Sr. was supposedly one of the main people behind the scenes who helped force him out).

My first year at LSU was 1978, so I was gone just before Jr. came on scene.
I do recall the Tigahs were recruiting both Jr. & a good RB out MS named Paul Ott Caruth. A prominent booster told me the feeling was they were going to get both, but it wound up being an 0-fer with POC going to Bammer & Jr. to aTm.
Don't know about the Ags paying more for recruits, but the Bammers have never been above paying top $$$ for a recruit.
Also cannot imagine the pressure Jr. would have had on him at LSU because of what Sr. did.

He [Cannon Jr] was good. I heard he was in construction as well but that has been a few years myself. And it was 1980 when he graduated from Broadmoor. Year later Mark Howie graduated and went on to play ball. I heard he overdosed and died some years later.
That was back when Broadmoor had some great athletes.
I went to Broadmoor, two years behind Cannon and one year behind Howie. Both were incredible athletes, although different. Cannon was a beast in every sport, just a dominant physical specimen.
Howie was smaller and played QB and baseball. Basketball too. Great QB, and played baseball for LSU and then pro ball for 10 years or so. Made it to AAA. I lived one street over from his family - he was a really nice guy.
I don't live in LA anymore and just recently heard he had died. Very sad.

This is the reason that was given back when he had signed. From what I remember he wasn't being offered to play for baseball at LSU.

The joke when I was at LSU was that A&M was the only school that would take his dad's money. /rimshot.
A&M did pay out some serious cash to recruits. They even gave Eric Dickerson a gold Trans Am, and he ended up going to SMU anyway.

There was a whole host of reasons that went in to his decision, many that have been mentioned here.
The main ones are that he wanted to play offense, which A & M were going to put him, while LSU correctly saw his potential greatness on defense.
Baseball was his true love, while he could have played both at LSU, A & M had a much better program and the SWC was a much better baseball conference than the SEC at the time.

On of the guys talks about how all A&M recruits somehow got a new Trans Am when they committed
I graduated from Acadiana in 1980. I recall people saying that he drove a new Trans Am to A&M. Also recall that Johnny Hector chose A&M over LSU the year before. Same story went around about him. Coincidentally, both of these guys finished second in rushing in their respective senior years to the same back, Junius Dural. Junius went to LSU but never really performed to expectations. Broke his collarbone in his freshman year, I think that affected his psyche from then on.

Not every college student comes from poverty. There are actually people out there with money.
