They’ll play until the Super Bowl.

Pre-Kiffin, I would agree. 1 playoff appearance is embarrassing. At least they capitalized on it that season

Should be 12 or 16 and get rid of all auto bids, use a formula including SOS, and get rid of the subjective committee eye test.

I felt like 12 was a good number. It’s a large enough field that statistically, the 2 actual best teams are pretty much guaranteed to get in regardless of schedule inequalities. I think 8 teams could have accomplished this just as well, but 12 is fine. I could have lived with 16.

24 is absurd IMO. There’s nowhere near enough parity at the top of CFB to justify a 24-team playoff. Through the first two years of the 12-team CFP, the #11 and #12 seeds have lost to the #5 and #6 seeds by an average of 22.5 points.

I don’t care either way because I’m not watching if/when that happens.

There should be no gap between the regular season and the playoffs. D1 is the only level of football that does this and it is absolutely stupid. Start with 16 teams the first week in Sept and play the championship on New Year’s Day. How is this so god damn hard.

It does on the surface, but if you think about it, the NFL has 32 teams, and 14 make the playoffs. So, nearly 50% of the league.

Inclusivity percentages should not be a factor in this instance.

Football is a very different game than either basketball or baseball.

For baseball, it isn't unreasonable for teams to play a doubleheader sometimes, and to play almost 60 games per season (and around 70 if you make it to Omaha). The physicality of basketball reduces the amount teams might play-- every other day is a pretty quick turnaround to play another team and a 30 game season wears teams down.

Football isn’t as bad as high level boxing or mma, where fighters might only have 2 to 4 fights a year, but it's more grueling than either baseball or basketball. Having a field of 24 or more teams, so that a team might have to potentially play 4 or 5 playoff games is a lot. March Madness, where a team can play 2 games in a weekend (like the sweet 16 on Thursday/Friday and Elite 8 on Sat/Sun), takes 3 weeks to complete the entire playoff. A 24 team football playoff would take almost twice as long... 5 weeks... assuming a strict 1 game per week schedule.

That's a long time. The games would start to lose something.

24?

Gross. There’s absolutely no need for it.

Still requires byes which are dumb as shite in college football.

Do 16, no byes, first 8 games are home games around NYE/NYD.

I mean you got a 100 something teams, why not take the top 32 and have fun with it.
because it completely devalues the regular season.

It would be like the NBA.

If the playoffs extend to 24 teams playing in a tough conference will be a serious disadvantage.

Last year if LSU played in the big 12 we would not go 7-5, we would go at least 9-3. A 9-3 team squeaks into the playoff but a 7-5 team does not in a 24 team conference.

With the SEC going to 9 games, it will be hard to get into to a 24 team playoff. More so a 7-5 SEC team would not be going to a really shifty bowl game.

24? WTF is the point of that amount of teams? What they should do is have the top 4 in each conference play a mini playoff for the conference championship, then match up the conference champions. Can do a P5 with the #1 seed getting a bye

Lot of bad football games in the first and second round of the playoffs.

Someone explain to me the magic number 24. First round -- 12 teams left. Second round -- six teams left. Now what? Round robin play?

If it's going to require some byes at the beginning, who gets those?

It will not do away with arguments, it will cause more.

How much more can we dilute it? I'm all for the playoff, but 24 teams is too much.

They’ve talked previously about how this would work and it’s not a bad idea. You have 9-24 play each other the first week. It’s basically a playin while the top 8 have byes. This would also create value in the regular season since you want to be in the top 8.
