Mike Scarborough brought up a good point that if this leads to the elimination of meaningless bowls, then okay.
If schools like LSU are going to have a bunch of back ups playing in "meaningless bowls" then just eliminate them.
Have the 24 team playoff and that's it.
Still gay AF though.

quote:the BCS system where only 2 teams played for the NC better than the silly polls, but 2 teams aren't nearly enough.
The downside is that it really reduces the magic of the regular season. Ultimate expression of this was the BCS era, where every game mattered. Now you can lose 3-4 games and get in.
4 teams was better, but there are still other worthy teams who got left out, especially teams that played a brutal schedule.
An 8, 10, or 12 team playoff is ideal. 16 or 24 is far too big and completely dilutes the regular season.
It's really a bad idea.

All this crying and moaning, yet the first time LSU has the first home playoff game, it will be the hottest ticket in LSU history.
Having 9-3 SEC teams in a 24 team playoff is much better than having 9-3 SEC teams being left out of the playoffs in favor of James Madison and Tulane, which is what we got last year.
This will certainly bring 2-3 games that end up being duds, but for the most part it is going to bring incredible match ups. I don't understand how watching the best teams in college football compete in a playoffs is a bad thing, but I also won't sit here and try to convince the cry babies otherwise.

So basically every team that is bowl eligible will be in the playoffs The regular season will basically be practice.

Except for “The Game of The Century” in 2011, where LSU’s “reward”
for winning was to play an extra game
against UGA, and Bama’s “penalty” for losing on its home field was a free pass into the national championship game.
That was truly the beginning of the end for college football.

At least people will stop freaking out over losses. They’ll just start freaking out over playoff losses.

I just laugh now, looking back, when for years we heard again and again, "You just can't do a playoff in college football, it interferes with the students finals exams, and it's just not in the spirit of college football".

The greatest thing ever invented in my lifetime has been ruined in every conceivable way shape or form. Everyone tried to warn you guys and you wouldn’t listen. You deserve everything you get moving forward. College football died in 2020 and now it’s officially gone forever.

In an unrelated post
the lowest seeded team to ever win the NCAA BBall tourney is 8th seed.
An 11 seed is the lowest to ever reach the final 4 and its happened 6 times.

All the programs are in massive debt and they’re scratching for every dollar they can get right now. It’s coming to an end

So it's officially playoffs or bust in the future.
For some teams it will be something like make the final 4, maybe final 8, or bust. Ohio St for example would have only missed the playoffs once in that interim Fickell year for the past 20 years or so. Simply making the playoffs is going to not mean jack shite for them.
It just sucks because the devastation of a single loss in the regular season will no longer be there. USC losing to UCLA or the Rodgers brothers Oregon St back then would no longer be a season ender, instead just a shoulder shrug and wait to see how they look in the playoffs. Some people will be for and against it, but the uniqueness of CFB's regular season is now just conforming to everyone else. It's been sad to see it go away slowly over the years but nothing we can do about it now.

Well yeah, but just because people will want to see their team play doesn’t mean this new format is better overall for the long term health of the sport.
There is absolutely such a thing as over saturation, and stretching what was a three month season with a bowl game 12 years ago into a full five month season almost equivalent to the NFL is going to reach that point imo.

How will recruiting and the portal factor in to this? Academics, even tough clearly that has zero priority in this conversation any more if it ever did.
Coaching changes like we saw this year with a playoff team losing their coach in the midst of their run. We were told that was the most heinous of acts, and now those same people are the ones making this happen which will undoubtedly create many more of these situations.
Opt outs, injuries, blowouts, these are all also going to be a big part of what is to come.

That’s kind of the point.
This won’t be “the best teams in college football” competing. It is going to be a lot of mid major bowl teams just there to generate space for TV and ad revenue.
If you think preferring the old model to that is being a “cry baby”, I won’t try to convince you otherwise either

I wonder if they'll rename FBS and FCS again. Can hardly be called Football Bowl Subdivision if bowls go away

That’s actually even a bigger reason to be against this.
Sorry to the other 40 teams and fanbases that used to enjoy a postseason celebration of all the hard work their team put into the season.
You are now denied that experience because we want 12 more teams to pretend like they have an argument for being the best team of the year even though it’s already extremely rare that even 8 deserve that chance.
But hey TV contracts aren’t going to inflate themselves, so you’re shite out of luck, rest of country.
Great call, Scarbs
