Xavier hill is not a project player. He was a 4* that was committed to Bama

Just because he’s highly rated doesn’t mean he’s not a project player. Plenty of 5 stars are rated there purely based on potential

I put him in the same class as Kardell. The potential is there but they still need to be developed. They will both be very solid OGs for the next 2-3 years.

My issue is lack of development of the 2018 class. We need impact as well as guys that they can develop. We've also got to keep guys around to bridge experience gaps

There was a mass exodus cause they just had the best season in history & just about every underclassmen player had a positive draft grade

That’s not a culture issue. That’s smart business. Both sides benefited. Equal trade off. They were ready to go

I'm not sure there's much there to be developed.

2 studs at WR and a bunch of average to Bernie average players after that.

What were cushenberry & Damien Lewis?

Correct. Those were 2 projects that worked out. And Miles probably needs the credit for Cush.

That's 2/14. The lack of development from the 2018 class as well as the defections are mostly what's causing the shoddy OL play now. Also most notably no spring and a covid marred practice slate.
Just some notes of clarity...

A) On Cush... yes, was a project. Worked out because like any project it requires BOTH good coaching and the player to put in above avg. work. Cush developed himself a SEC-body and they coached him in technique along the way.

B) On Lewis... absolutely was NOT a project. You could see it on the field and film. He wasn't quite SEC-ready coming in from JUCO but unlike Traore you could see that he had the skills and athleticism that only needed refinement. Don't care what the recruiting services said or what offers he had... he was a no-brainer and no-brainers aren't projects.

Traore was a huge project. He lacked the physical skills (athleticism), his technique was terrible, and some of his fundamental bad habits were worse.

Many in this thread have cited that the lack of high-level OL is the biggest problem. And that is true. The only thing short of getting better at buying them that we can do we are doing [somewhat]. I think the best and easiest "mitigation" for there not being enough talent to go around is stock up on OTs and play the youngest OTs on the interior until ready for OT. You should always be getting future OTs experience, even at the expense of the IL. It's dang sure the lesser of two evils and not having good OTs.

One exception to that is OC. If we were under center most of the time like we used to be it still matters, but not as much. In the shotgun like we are almost all the time, it matters alot. Not just bad snaps either. Slow, awkward snaps throws the whole damn offense off. You MUST have a GREAT snapper in this offense.

LOL. All eggs in one basket?

Yes, I know we are in the running for Leigh.

How about answering my questions?

Even if we get Leigh and Savion we still are short. We got four in 2019, three in 2020, and that would make three in 2021. We should be averaging four and a half per year.

Bama has six in 2019, three in 2020, and four so far in 2021. That’s 13 for Bama to 8 for LSU so far.

Except that Hill is way more athletic than Thomas, doesn’t have a weak lower body, and is not 40# overweight

deep trenches is where championships are won. your 3* receivers have time to get open when you build a wall in front of the QB. not that we'll ever lack perimeter skill. the same thing goes for the DL. you don't have to have erasers at corner when the QB doesn't have time to stand still to make a throw. I can overlook deficiencies this year with the draft and everything else but not parlaying the mass exodus into heavy recruiting at that position isn't something that should be ignored.

sorry for the long rant

This x1000.

If you are going to sign 5 OL for example. Sign 3 OT; 1 OG; 1 OC. Jmo

And like I20 said play your younger Tackles at Guard until they are ready to slide out to Tackle.

I see all the unintelligent, emotional side of the fan base has made its way to the recruiting board.

The magnitude by which this board is better than tRant during the lulls between recruiting headlines is astounding. Great thread.

Look at Bama’s recruiting class and then look at our recruiting class. Tell me the difference.

This. They're the exception not the rule. It's not worth comparing.

I think we had a great line last year.

We had very average to below-average OT play and GREAT interior line play with Cush and Lewis.

Burrow and CEH really masked the OT performance.

And Grant Delpit was clearly the best DB in the country too, right?

Let's not joke ourselves, the OL last year was better than what we've had recently but it was FAR from being the best in the country and certainly not best in our conference. Go by all the stats you can look up for OL:
LINK

It was an average pass blocking line and very good run blocking line.

I condensed this football outsiders list to SEC teams only on an excel sheet and averaged out the run and pass stats based on rank (1-14) in the SEC. We were 2nd in the SEC in the run blocking stats and 9th in the pass blocking stats. If you average all the ranks of all the stats we were 3rd in the SEC, behind UGA and bama. It's a simple average but it does show we werent clear cut the best even in our own conference. It certainly shows we were an average pass blocking line - and that includes Burrow avoiding maybe 2 dozen extra sacks most QBs would have taken.

If you take the 5 run stats and give them 50% weight and and 3 pass stats and give them 50% weight (to get closer to a true average rank), we were 5th in the conference.
