That’s my deal. I actually like going to the gym but lately it’s just too crowded. That combined with people setting their ‘stuff’ on usable equipment bothers me. Have plenty of rooms in my house to convert one. Going to pull the trigger.

Pretty much everything was from Bolt Fitness. Around 2k all in. 2x3 rack, bumper plates, bar, adjustable bench some kettle bells, accessory hanger for punching bag, stall mats, and various accessories like belts and stuff included. Didn't plan on financing it, but they had 0% financing for 24 months and no shipping since I live in Houston area. Far cheaper per month than the crossfit gym I was at, and it's paid off now.

A lot

At $20/month membership I’m guessing those that have a home gym is just a preference as the cost won’t pay for itself esp considering cardio equipment, etc.

Correct. It won't ever be cost effective. Do it for the convenience of not having to drive to the gym, the flexibility to get a workout in whenever you want especially when you're in a time crunch, not having to wait for equipment, cleanliness, etc

You are hitting the right time of year for this. Black Friday sales are already popping up.

Also, check Facebook Marketplace. People unload good equipment all the time of you're looking.

As far as money goes, you're not going to break even. You will be happier not having to share or wait for equipment. I roll out of bed at 3:45AM and am warming up in my garage by 4AM and I never have to wait for anyone.

Convenience is a big factor for me. Can squeeze in a workout when time allows. Accumulated a lot in the last few years, some new, some used and built a few things (lifting platform, plyo-box).
-Echo bike, concept2 rower, ski-erg and bike-erg
-GHD
-pull-up bar, barbell stands, flat bench
-DBs, KBs, wallballs, couple of barbells and bumper plates
All-in probably less than $6K

I think I’m in for about $4500 cad or so; I have an elliptical, a bells of steel power rack, 405 lbs plates, barbell. Curl bar, incline/decline bench, like 150 lbs 1” weights (2.5/5/10lbs) with spinlock dumbbell handles, and a cable pulley machine that uses Olympic plates. Kinda collected it over a few years.

I’d never go to the gym if it weren’t at home, and I work out with my son 4-5x a week so I guess there is a little extra value there

Home gym total: $2936 us ($4,510 au) for a home gym where I don't need much more for PPSA programs:

Cashed in on the COVID home gym phase a lot of people went through and sold up due to typically having more options now

My advise is make a habit of looking look at local marketplaces and other local online forums, and save cash in wallet to buy when something is available.

Bought a new commercial power rack $700au, with 4 J cups and additionally safety arms, he paid $2400au. Same guy sold me 12 x 15mm gym matts for $50, which were also new and go for $50 each.

Bought a used ORBIT AirForce Pro Air Bike for $500, which retails for $2000au. Bought this from a local gym 500klm away, because he was upgrading equipment

Second hand commercial flat bench for $100, which retails for $500

Second hand commercial ajustable bench for $600, which retails for 1k

First barbell from retailer on sale was $100, which was 50% off

Initial weight plates: initially started with rubber coated plates from a local retail for 40% off sale: 4 x 20kg, 2x 10kg, 5kg, 2.5kg and 1 .5. for $300au

Upgaded to bumper plates: 4 x 25kg, 20kg and 15kg. 2 x 10kg, 5kg, 2.5 and 1.5kg, with two red elite barbells and a weight tree for around $2100 via an online sale with a commercial gym equipment store.

Secondhand dumbbells: 2x 4kg, 6kg, 8kg, 10kg, 15kg, 17.5kg and 20kg all for $400

2 x 8kg Ybells and a 12kg Ybell for $200

If I could give anyone advise is not only wait for online sales,

Also press the 'Shop' store button (pre enters in details online) while items are in shopping cart, and leave them there, and the store will contact you and offer a better price and/or shipping. I know its dodgy leaving credit card info on there, but mine is a spending debit card with no money in it most of the time

Good luck!

Home gyms are not a good investment unless you factor in the time traveling to and from work outs and the convenience. You aren’t going to “save money” by investing in a home gym.

You will save time and that is valuable. You may also workout more which is also valuable.

I like working out in group settings so I’ll never have a home gym.

Yep, I mean you can get a quality home gym for less than 5k, but it ain’t gonna be like having a gym membership

I have prolly 15k+ in mine. Is it worth the squeeze….worth it just for my boys to see me lifting in my 40s and normalizing it

Plus with three boys in all kinds of sports it would be literally impossible for me to be able to get to a gym. Just wouldn’t happen and that’s why I built it to begin with. To have my kids lifting in there now is just bonus.

100% worth the squeeze for me but not cost effective unless you factor in time and ease of use

I’ve probably spent $2,500 on equipment, most of that being on a Rogue power rack, barbell, and plates 7 years ago when things were cheaper.

Of course that doesn’t count the $70k shop/garage lol

The weights were the most expensive thing. I bought bumper plates from Rogue and Wright.

Power blocks were free. Squat rack, rower, and assault bike were all bought via FB marketplace for half of new cost. Now granted I've been having my stuff for 7-8 years now.

But I currently pay $20 a month to Club4 and I enjoy all the extra equipment I can use now. I'll use the garage when I decide to sleep in or on the weekends.

its not as bad as social media makes it out. find the right gym and both of these are hardly a problem.

My initial investment. Added a few hundred $$ more with dumbbells, weight racks, etc.

My 24Hour membership is only $22/year for rest of my life, so I will never break even. It was worth it though. Kids are at the age they can lift and it is nice to be out in the garage in peace and quiet sometimes.

I got a Marcy bench, 40lb bar, 45s, 35s, 25s, 10s, 5s plates for 250 about 10 years ago. I hung the pull down bar from the ceiling for pullups. Need to get more dumbbells.

I welded a rack for dumbbells and a bench to lift with. Before moving I welded a bench press rack with a pull up bar. My mom loves garage selling and she found everything from 5lb to 40lb dumbbells usually for $10 or less per weight. So maybe $100 on dumbbells.

I moved from my old house and didn't bring the bench press rack with me. Need to build another one. I don't have any leg equipment at the house so it's dead lifts at home and peloton for legs. We also have a gym in my office so I usually hit legs when I'm in the office.
