I'd say I have over $30k in just woodworking tools. If you add in the cost of the building, electricity and lumber cost--it's an expensive deal.
It's definitely not something most people can just go out and buy all the tools at one time. I've bought most of my tools over years and years. As I come across new projects I try to justify buying new tools especially if they're something I can use across different disciplines.
Space to work is one of the things that really slowed me down in the past. Even a 3 car garage gets cramped when you get a project going and have stuff spread out. And horizontal work space seems to get cluttered really quickly.

Is there a scenario where Tom Clancy had post partum depression and murdered his children I haven't seen yet. Google wasn't any help.

I've built a lot of furniture. For the most part I do it for myself and for friends and family. Usually don't charge anywhere near enough to make a meaningful amount of money. But I do enjoy making expensive sawdust.
And yes, my desire to build furniture came from growing tired of overpriced furniture. Even the more expensive brands are still just not durable and/or comfortable. Custom furniture is so price prohibitive I'd rather buy the tools and materials myself and make exactly what I want.
A friend's employee does cutting boards around Christmas time for side money. He would make a few grand in the Christmas season.
My "retirement" plan is to do woodworking with my spare time and possibly selling stuff but I'm not convinced there is enough in it to make a living off of it. But as a retirement plan, do something creative, productive and bring in a little extra here and there would be perfect.

Not a solar guy right now but it could one day see a major tech change.
I really like the idea of solar, but there isn't really anything incentivizing for people to convert. And government subsidies are not long term viable. The product should be able to stand on its own and it can't at the moment.
The solar cons are:
1 - Aesthetics. A lot of people don't like the looks
2 - Holes in your roof or additional room for the solar farm.
3a - Economics - without subsidies, it takes 10 to 15 years for solar to pay for themselves. There are diminishing returns over the life of the solar panels. I can't find any source that scientifically and unbiased-ly demonstrates the long term panel life span. It could be meaningful, or maybe not. But given I can't find the information when I look for it, makes me think it's not favorable.
3b - Electrical Municipalities aren't interested in offering incentives for back-feeding the grid. You're strictly limited to using the electricity for the time it is producing, A battery bank is just more expense in the conversion and also isn't attractive either.
If any of these items could be addressed, it would add appeal to solar. But who is responsible for addressing these?

Can you expand on what you mean by building materials? You have my curiosity.

Latest update. The shiplap ceiling took me a few weeks to complete with my availability. Laid out the boards on saw horses and went to town staining. I could stain about 32 boards at a time before running out of room on the sawhorses. It took a bit to figure out trick to get the tongue to feed into the groove, but I was able to create a couple of jigs to help. I was able to do the ceiling entirely on my own. Use a block and wedge as one jig and then a jig to hold the opposite end up while I worked from the other side.
Wish I could use the AC out there but I don't have doors on the structure yet. And prepping the walls stirs up a lot of dust that I didn't want sucked into the return. So been I've been raw dogging it out there. Takes about an hour if I start at 7AM to be drenched in sweat.

Apparently they were the first group off. The guy had gone and staged the ball in the hole before the round. He told his group he may have to bail for work at some point in the round. "Got a call" on the hole before the "aced" hole and left the group but then he was on the next tee and told his group he didn't have to leave after all and he decided to tee off. They asked him how his shot went and he said he hit it a little thin but it was on a good line or something to that nature. Then they get to the green and the rest is self explainatory. Thats the gist of what I understand.

Did you have a thread on here awhile back about this? I remember the dude getting bent out of shape when he was called on it and his score tanked after the rules were enforced. Or did I read that somewhere else with similar circumstances.
re: Parenting question - what time should a teenager be going to bed during the school year?
Posted by WhiskeyThrottle on 8/13/26 at 9:09 pm to StringedInstruments
Thats a good age for learning good habits. Sleep should be a priority for everyone regardless of age and the later you go to bed the less sleep youre going to have the opportunity to get. Id there's nothing dictating he stays up later, 830 or 900 is a good time to crash out.

Easiest thing that’s helped me..Use the bed for sleeping and sex only. Don’t scroll the phone in bed or watch tv in bed. Keep the bedroom cool and dark. A fan helps..the noise will help.
One of my biggest challenges in marriage was getting my wife comfortable going to be with the TV off. We've had a TV in our bedroom since we got married and I do watch it in there occasionally in the middle of the day while the wife watches something in the living room so I won't just pull it out. But she routinely went to sleep with the TV on, and the remote was bogarted on her side so I had to wake her up to turn it off. After threatening her for a year of going to bed with the TV off, I had to tell her no more. Now we rarely turn the TV on when we're going to bed.

You got outdoor fans? If so, let me know what you got because I've got two that need replacing. Blades are sagged over like they're indoor use fans. They were here when we moved in.

Im just not a fan of mixing sweet treats with spice. It much if a fan of tajin either. Hell, I like a margarita occasionally and dont enjoy the jalapeño margaritas. I have a higher than average tolerance for spice but mixing sweet and spice is not normally my flavor profile.
re: Renting out your swimming pool/backyard
Posted by WhiskeyThrottle on 8/5/26 at 3:07 pm to CR4090
A neighbor down the street bought a house at the top of his price range and has been renting out his backyards for a dog to come run. It isn't very often, but I guess it helps them some. We have 2 acre lots and I guess apartment dwellers like to bring their dogs out to stretch their legs.
Renting out my pool and backyard is certainly not for me. I work too hard on my crap to introduce a risk to me keeping it.

I question your decision making process marrying anyone in HR. Kidding man. Glad it worked out for you. But I do hate HR except the person responsible for making sure my check is deposited.
I dated couple of girls I've worked with. Had another coworker with some massive cans trying to get me to go fool around with her, but I declined because I had a girlfriend at the time and didn't want to cross the cheating line. Fortunately, the girlfriend I had at the time is now my wife and I have a clear conscience.
