Dude was doing light bench press (~165#) and it completely detached from the bone ??
Has to get it surgically repaired

Was talking about it w buddies and somebody said bench is stupid to do as you age because it’s dangerous and not a functional lift. I had thought bench was pretty safe albeit not the most functional. Thoughts?

I only do dumbbells on bench. Seems more natural.

Tore my Péc benching when I was 20. My buddy spotting me could hear it. Hurt like a bitch and can’t really flat bench anymore. I stick to push-ups and light to moderate dumbbell work. There’s still a not where the muscle folded up on my left pec.

Got to wonder if he stretched and warmed up the muscle or attacked it cold.

I wish you said he was doing 315. Now I’m nervous.

I’d be willing to bet he wasn’t controlling the eccentric (negative) portion of the lift properly.

He was probably letting the bar free fall (to an extent) and not engaging his pecs until it was time to press

Kind of like using his pecs as a rubber band instead of keeping constant tension

Ask if he’s ever done roids. Either way, it had to be ready to go if a light weight tore it. Not like it was 100% healthy and that happened.

more then likely this. Pec tears are actually decently common in really heavy benchers that are doing max effort work alot, but not in light benching.

OP if you are scared stick to ring pushups, weighted ring pusups, DB Bench, Neutral grip bench, or bands and chains.

Light is relative too. 165 lbs may not sound like much to folks in here, but in reality it's a lot more than most people can bench. If he hit it cold and possibly a little dehydrated and is a new lifter, the injury isn't so shocking.

Probably one of the more dangerous lifts honestly. Deadlift, you can just drop the bar, squat you can bail out if you're stuck. A bar can literally kill you just laying there. Anyway...

I always have this fear too. You just have to be really conscious of what you're doing, and making sure you're warming up, and doing a proper bench. But injury will never escape. A lifter I follow on insta, just ripped his bicep from moving a sled he was just walking with. Nothing heavy at all. Just moved the sled, boom, detached bicep.

I set my safeties just high enough to avoid hitting them on the eccentric, but high enough to prevent injury.

Spoke to a doc. He said the majority of pec and bicep injuries come from steroid users.

My college buddy and training partner tore his pec after an inadequate warm up and jumping to 225 lb on incline BP. I drove him to New Orleans a few days later to have surgery to have his pec re-attached.

With that said, he was also on the sauce. I'm far from an expert, but seems this only happens to sauce users or those whom don't know how to warm up properly and activate all requisite components throughout the movement.

Buddy of mine tore his. It was one of the grossest things if ever seen. Freaking rolled up like a slinky.

I love bench press. Flat, wide grip, narrow grip, incline, decline, reverse grip, barbell, dumbbell...you name it.
