How do you feel about restaurants adding a 15% order surcharge?

From a Facebook group:

"I see a lot of posts saying that we should support local businesses. Yes I agree.
We went to Superior Grill in BR today for lunch and they added a 15% "order surcharge"to my bill. I asked about it and was told it was an extra charge to help their employees. I always tip 20% or more when we eat out but I don't think we should be forced to pay surcharges."

How do you feel about the surcharge?

Im ok with them doing it for a while
Restaurants are screwed through no fault of their own so if they feel the need to charge more right now, that’s their choice.

Friend,

I only wish the surcharge were higher.

15% can be a good bit of money on a superior tab,
Are you also expected to leave a tip on top of that?

Kind of bullshite. Vincent's added 15% to my bill. So with tax and service charge there is a 25% premium on their menu price.

On the positive they gave me free wine while I waited and the food was incredible.

I think they should definitely inform the customer beforehand. If not it’s pretty shitty.

I think they should post it on their front door so that patrons can decide if it's acceptable to them. I don't like being blindsided when a bill arrives.

I wonder if they'll be giving out 15% discounts in a few years when things are back to normal and they're rolling along.

I’m not tipping 20% on top of a 15% gratuity. They’ll get an extra 5% from me to bring it to 20%

FYI people are shitty tippers in general and most places like Superior the serving staff is averaging 12-15% tips, so I could see why they might want to guarantee their staff the 15%

If they got PPP money including the overhead then they are fine. This is BS

I would be highly disappointed if restaurants that are doing this. Also benefited from ppp loan or their workers collecting unemployment. Then they should not need the help.

Went on Friday night and had no problem paying the surcharge plus adding a little more.

I'm thinking a lot of restaurants are having to pay a lot more than usual to get employees to come to work. Our government created this mess, but as usual, we the people have to help fix it.

I don't mind paying more in some form or fashion for the next month or so. Eating out is a choice so either pay the going rate for food/drinks/service or stay home.

Before they seated us, the hostess informed me they were adding a 15% surcharge.

Tough situation and I understand the need for restaurants to add the surcharge, but like others have stated, it should be told to diners beforehand.

I’ve been leaving bigger than normal tips on takeout but this would turn me off to doing that.

15% service charge = 0% gratuity

An extra charge to help their employees? That is the definition of gratuity

Just a way to give their staff a raise without having to pay increased income tax
