I guess we dine and drink at different kinds of places.
I’ve seen a credit card fee twice in the last three years

Lucky you. From what I’ve experienced, many restaurants charge it. In fact many retailers in the food industry are charging(specialty meat establishments for example)

I think this is totally immoral and horrible. Raise your menu prices instead of adding a surcharge. And don’t give me that it’s just because of covid BS. It’s wrong. Period. How about filing a report for price gouging during a state of emergency? Think that goes too far, it may but it also may be illegal.

As long as patrons have advanced notice, I have no issue with it.

My experience has been the exact opposite. I can’t even recall seeing an added card charge fee in years

And if the restaurant tells the customer before they seat them, it’s still immoral and horrible?

This is sad. You have business owners busting their arse trying to make money after being shutdown for two months and now only being able to open at 25% capacity.

And here you have the ignorant one's thinking the greedy owners are raking in the millions with a surcharge.

And don't forget Billy Graham in here talking about restaurants being immoral.
You can't make this stuff up.

Every restaurant charges it, its just built into the price of the food. It’s tacky as shite to add that to a bill especially in the name of “helping employees”

Anyone who raises their prices on each food item is going to just keep those forever.. even when they're no longer paying employees $850/week.

Whereas the 15% fee would presumably be removed when unemployment is no longer giving the $600 federal stimulus.

- Get PPP loan
- Do not have to pay it back if you get your employees back
- Call employees and they say "nah, making more on unemployment"
- In order to get your employees back and not have to pay back the loan, you match what they're making
- In order to afford to match while operating at 25%, you must raise prices or tack on a fee

Does it really matter if they opt for the service charge vs. raising prices across the board? Its the same thing, and if they raise prices, you can forget them coming back down after this ends.

That doesn’t sound legal to just pop on a 15% surcharge without telling you about it

The limited menu they're currently using has this, both online and on the paper version.

quote:

*all to-go orders made during this limited time will be subject to a 15% service charge. All proceeds from this service charge will be allocated directly to our heart-of-house and service staff team members.

The government had really screwed the restaurant biz in the last couple of months. Companies are still having to pay workman’s comp and all the other things. Bills have not disappeared.

If they are going to not allow them to open, then either pay their bills for them or forgive them. That’s the bottom line.

Having said that, I’ve been tipping like a crazy person during this, because I know these guys are hurting. Don’t make me pay extra because the govt is fricking up your biz. Take your problems to them.

I’d refuse to pay a surcharge. I can’t imagine it’s legal.

A service charge is legal as long as it is disclosed somewhere on the menu or signs. Just like a charge for parties of 6 or more is legal.

I'm sure they'll remove it for someone who bitches because it isn't worth the hassle, but it isn't illegal to charge someone for something you've disclosed. Granted, I do think they should also be telling people vocally.

your right about all this. My buddy was told he missed out on the loan by ten minutes. Now he’s telling me how restaurants are worried about reopening because their employees are making 4K a month sitting at home.

I get what Superior is trying to do but I feel like in the end it will backfire against the server. The average customer is pretty dumb to how the service industry works unless they’ve worked it. They see a 15% fee added on and assume they don’t have to tip as they normally would.

It would’ve been better to just increase food/drink prices. My buddy that owns a bar that just reopened did this.
