re: How do you feel about restaurants adding a 15% order surcharge?

Superior is my place and those are my people, and I'll to do anything I can to help them.
That being said.. I 100% agree that it should be posted everywhere so patrons are aware. We've been going regularly through the pandemic and never been informed of the surcharge. As someone who usually just gives my card over without waiting on a bill, I didn't know until someone else asked me if I had noticed it. Someone is going to blow up over that at some point if they're not being told. It should be very obvious to patrons.
Many restaurants have had to increase pay beyond what the loan covered in order to get staff back since 90% of them were refusing due to making more on unemployment. So I have no issue with whatever must be done to achieve that. The way I understand it at some of these places is the takeout workers, kitchen, bussers, dishwashers, etc. are being paid hourly an amount high enough that would make them come back. Your 15% charge is likely going there. The tipped employees are making an smaller hourly and tips like usual.
I still tip on top of the charge. To each their own.

Any decent person would.
I've been tipping 25-35% because I'm just happy to be able to start going to places again.

I would if restaurants would just be honest and raise their menu prices accordingly.
I don't see the need to have a separate surcharge
That being said, it does appear that you really do enjoy patting yourself on the back. carry on.

You are always such a ignorant arse in these threads. It's like a bat signal and we always know how it's going to turn out once you show up.
Carry on.

To play devil's advocate here, this is a temporary thing. Going into the POS and raising the price on every single item is a lot more work than just saying "We have to pay our staff more during the time they'd have been making more unemployed, so we are adding 15% to cover it".
Put it this way -- If they raised the prices by 15%, there's a fat chance they're bringing them back down after this shite ends. They'll be taking off that 15% surcharge when they are back to competing in the restaurant market.

Just a way to give their staff a raise without having to pay increased income tax
How so?

Yeah, I can't speak for other places but they're not pulling 15% cash out and handing it to employees off the books. It is being used to temporarily raise their hourly wages.

And the 15% they collect is subject to income tax.
Not sure how anyone is avoiding income tax.

I spoke incorrectly. I was referring to payroll tax

Still not following how it doesn’t increase payroll tax.

Dont forget the 4% charge if using a card to pay.
The only way a waiter really profits is if he/she gets a cash tip. Otherwise they are paying taxes on that income

Are many places doing a credit card surcharge? Thankfully I haven’t come across that yet

15% service charge + 4% credit card charge is BS.

I've never seen that anywhere I go

Pre-Chyna virus many restaurants were charging the customer extra for card use. I doubt they have stopped it

Instead of adding a surcharge, why don’t they just raise the price.
Same thing but doesn’t come across as dickish

I only wish the surcharge were higher
I’m sure they will let you pay more if you don’t feel like they are charging enough

Define many.
I only occasionally saw it at tiny ethnic restaurants where they sold almost no alcohol so a credit card fee in a $10 meal does kind of hurt them

I think the surcharge should be 20%
