Texas Roadhouse New York Strip. I've had Ruth's Chris and the steaks I get at TR are every bit as good, and occasionally better.

Bergen Bar and Grill in Windom, MN. A friend of mine from my Big 4 days used to work in SE MN quite a bit, and would rave about this place. I found myself on I-90 and decided to give it a try.

The restaurant is small, and in the exact middle of nowhere. It is a little house in a corn field about 10 miles north of I-90.

The steak was absolute perfection, and cheap. I got a king cut ribeye, baked potato, and salad with two beers. With a generous tip it was 24 bucks.

Ruth Chris in BR is still that place and consistently the best around and best in the chain of Chris’ locations.

I had a bite of A5 wagyu that was hit with a blowtorch and put on rice at an omakase lunch a while back. That is the easy winner for me.

But it’s truly hard to beat a filet from RC.

+1 on this.

The wife and I like to have a night out at a Ruth's Chris when we are vacationing in a new place, just to test the consistency.

Avoid the one in Fort Lauderdale. The steak was a little dry, a little tough (for a Ruth's Chris ribeye) and the cheesecake had a fishy taste (literally... a fish taste... how the hell...?)

Only two really stand out:

First time I had Doe's Eat Place (I was fairly young) - but subsequent times didn't live up to the first one I had.

Second was first time I had Doris Metropolitan. I was a little older, and have had it a couple times since but still doesn't match up to the first time.

I think there needs to be a rare culmination of circumstances to make a meal (not just steak) really stand out from the crowd. Everything from the execution and presentation of the restaurant, to your own personal mood, hunger, company, etc.

I've been to plenty of prime steakhouses that were simply a little lacking (still good of course), but among my favorites I can't really say one experience is head and shoulders better. In Atlanta that would be probably Bones/Hals/Chops, I guess.

Same goes for good spots I've done in Chicago, NYC, etc. - it's more of whether they hit that top tier or not, but if they do I have trouble narrowing it down beyond that.

Best I ever had was wagyu in Okinawa Japan (Four Seasons Steakhouse) 2nd best and in USA was Binion's Roadhouse in Hendersonville NC. That one was so good I went back the next nite for another.

I had one of these in High School. It was the first great steak I ever recall having.

Jerimiah's in Paducah, KY was memorable, although I was still young.

Of the chains, it's tough to beat Ruth's Chris.

I had a great steak at III Forks in Dallas, as well, but follow up steaks were less good.

I think a lot of things factor in. Although a restaurant may prepare the steak the same way, it doesn't always have the same wow factor. Weather it's the piece of steak, the cook, the way the meat is handled before cooking, or just how hungry you are, I've noticed that the same cut at the same restaurant has variances.

Won a couple of hundred at a company sponsored golf tournament at Etowah Valley.

Three of my foursome shamed me into paying their tab at this steakhouse.

I give it a strong 4 stars.

1) Porterhouse at Charlie’s Steakhouse in New Orleans late 80’s.

2) Porterhouse at Ruth’s Original Location on Broad in New Orleans.

3) Ruth’s Chris in BR- never had a bad steak here- but not as good as the first two. Nostalgia?

A single experience??

The best steak I ever had was from a saltgrass in San Antonio back in 2011. Before that was at Tchoup Chop in Orlando.

I’ve had good steaks at Ruth’s Chris, Sullivan’s, Long Horn, Texas Land & Cattle, and even Texas Roadhouse - but none of those places are consistent - I’m sure saltgrass isn’t either.

In New Orleans it's hard to beat the bone in ribeye at Chophouse.
