Sounds like the funds are all from private donors, so what a fool wishes to do with his/her personal money is none of my concern.

until they cherry pick stats from these "studies" and push for more money for more people. Then you gotta pay up, taxpayer.

1) IMHI

2) This is private money, so, whatever

3) I hope they are tracking how the money is spent and whether or not lives are really improved.

I see this going exactly as planned. There will in no way be any abuse of this program and it will run as smooth as silk. I'm sure it's been well thought out and planned.

Let's do it.

those residents won't be shopping at their usual grocery stores pretty soon. they'll have to travel 50 miles to grocery shop.

concept of universal guaranteed income

Isn't this already in place? I see plenty of people living off disability and wellfare that don't seem to fit the intended criteria

got to see it in action in February 2019 when Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs launched the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration, which gave 125 residents $500 a month for 18 months

So this should be wrapping up...curious how much it's transformed lives and the community.

Or perhaps it just acted as a disincentive to do anything to better their place in life and created an even larger sense of entitlement. I'm on pins and needles over here.

ETA: Isnt welfare essentially universal basic income? Black people have been getting that for decades.

UBI is coming whether some of y'all like it or not. Anyone who thinks their job is immune from technological advances will find themselves in the UBI waiting line.

Then they would need 5 million to hire people to do a one person job.

This. Its unavoidable unless the government stifles innovation with regulations to save jobs. It would be a war of lobbyists and the highest bidder would win out.

The only other thing they could do is give so many tax incentives or breaks for having X amount of employees for X amount of time.

Education needs to shift to meet what the few jobs that will be left.

Sucks for those of us with young kids trying to imagine what their lives will look like.

As long as it remains a voluntary donation setup I really don't care.

It is not going to stop there. This is the first step to switching funding over to the tax payer.

How does giving people free money insure they are gonna get out of poverty?

If the city doesn’t teach these folks about financial education, the residents are not going to be any better off than they previously were.
