Don't be surprised to hear this is the coming weeks...

Griffin understands AD's worry about extending for another 5 years, so they compromise.

AD agrees to opt into 2020-21. Griffin has a full year to show him how different things are and how he can win here long term. Next summer, AD then can either sign the supertax extension or request a trade if he still wants one and Griff won't fight him.

If I had to bet money on it today, I would rank this outcome slightly over AD getting traded and greatly over AD signing the extension

How will this effect the Pelicans being able to sign another big name player and when? Would it be more about overall culture and direction or win total in 2019-2020? Jrue still the alpha?

that aint exactly "all in" though, is it?
its fair to wonder how that will play with his teammates. as soon as the wins rack up, the fans will ease up on him

also you have to wonder how equipped he is to handle the certainly constant questioning he will get. durant and irving can tell him all about that

God! I can’t take another year of this AD to the Lakers BS that the main stream talking heads are going to put out. Those guys are relentless in pushing their narrative of every superstar wants to goto NY or LA.

Not bad at all. Would probably be best, and other trade offers might get better with time so it couldn’t hurt

I'm not opposed to that. I think it would be really hard for him to swallow his pride at this point.

I'm curious to know what we could do in this one year window with our space and expirings to make enough noise?

~35-40m is what we're working with right?

I think it makes the most sense for all parties involved. If AD wants to win, this is the best basketball situation for him of the teams that can actually attain him.

Unless you believe in the knicks trio dream

I wonder if it undercuts our trade position and basically puts us at the mercy of AD, similar to Cleveland having to sell LeBron on staying each season.

I just have a feeling that him opting in buys us time but doesn’t change his mind, meaning we start this crap all over again but with less of a clean slate to work with on a rebuild.

I'm not sure Pelicans fans have the stomach to go on this AD roller coaster ride for 2 more years. I know I certainly don't. He either signs the supermax and starts winning back the fans or we tell him thanks for your service. It's time we take control of this franchise and run it the way we want without depending on AD's feelings

From AD's perspective... what has Griffin or Zion actually ever shown HIM? Is it not fair for him to want to actually see it in practice instead of just in theory before he commits 5 more years of his life somewhere?

I actually don't hate it. I wouldn't be a fan of just trying w/o him opting in and then trading him in Feb if he is unhappy. But I think this is a very fair compromise if AD says, "Prove to me over that year it will be different than the shite show it has been and I will sign that deal"

I'd have no issue with that

If AD wants to win, his long term commitment helps Griffin do his job that much better.

The disclaimers he put out on twitter suggest it's fan fiction.

I dont want his potentially negative influence to rub off on Zion who may or may not be thrilled about coming here to begin with.

That is my main concern.

For this to work, I think he has to give some sort of public apology. Could be as simple as he received some bad advice.

Trade him to the Celtics for Tatum, Brown, Smart, and future draft picks. That puts him in the east and we can move forward.

I wouldn’t believe anything he says and especially if he retains his agent.
