Opinions on this program or others like it ?

This is just where auto insurance is going. It's inevitable.

State Farm's Drive Safe & Save® is a usage-based insurance program that offers an initial 10% discount, potentially rising to 30% off, based on your driving habits (mileage, acceleration, braking, cornering).

How it Works: The app connects via Bluetooth to a beacon in your vehicle to record trips, requiring location services to be set to "always allow".

I’ve heard they’re terrible. Who would want to be constantly monitored by their insurance company?

We had GEICO and they had a policy where if you put it into your car for a certain time then they would offer a discount. They did reduce my rates by around 10-15%.

My mom's rate actually went up, but shes a terrible driver

We did it for a few months and our insurance dropped like $60 a month

I am 95% positive they can only use it to give you a better rate and not a worse rate. I have it and everything I drive I hear the beep go off from a "hard" break. I pay $1,500/6 months for our 2 newer vehicles at full coverage, $300k CSL, and $1k collision and $0 comprehensive.

So many apps and programs are already tracking your every movement, why not save on insurance while at it?

Edit: quick research into the discount portion of these plug in devices is that it depends on the insurance carrier. State Farm says its only for discount and your rate will not increase from the data. Others like Progressive said that your rate could increase (I have Progressive and consistently have 2/5 stars and I still get offered a discount so I would imagine you have to be a VERY bad driver for them to hike your rate up).

I like saving money. I’m not doing anything illegal so why would I care?

The Minimum discount State Farm will give is 1% if you are a bad driver. They will not raise your rates on Drive Safe and Save.

Those who would give up liberty for savings on car insurance wind up with neither.

I tried USAA's similar program for a while but it ran off the phone so it activated even when you were a passenger in a car.

Any engine with a turbo or one that accelerates quickly is going to get you dinged on the acceleration category until your discount reaches zero and there's nothing they can do to fix it.

I have nearly perfect scores everywhere else and they blast me for acceleration and I'm not even speeding.

Meanwhile I drive the exact same way I did in my old truck and it gives me full credit for acceleration and gives me the full discount.

There are inherent problems with it and it's behind the times with current automobile production

I have it with State Farm
It saves me a good bit but I work from home so I’m not driving daily.
I probably wouldn’t have it if I had to commute daily.

We had it with Progressive. The threshold they use for rate of deceleration is less than how fast you would need to slow down to avoid running a red light from 55-65mph. So whenever you slam on brakes to avoid someone who pulls out in front of you or a last second yellow light, you’ll be penalized. Don’t recommend.

Allstate does it but it’s only for 50 trips. You can check your trip to see if it’s good or bad and decide to keep or delete it. Then you just turn it off until close to renewal.

Probably only a matter of time until the insurance companies start upping your rates if you decline to participate in the program, if they haven't started doing it already.

I do it, I work from home and my wife works 3.5 miles away.

Our insurance is ~$108 per month.

I had this at one time. I had a manual transmission car and creeped in and out of stops on purpose to see what it would do. It dinged me for both acceleration and stopping. Took it out after that. I was told that it couldn't be used to raise my rate but I don't believe that one bit. As much as they try to fight claims, it's hard for me to believe that perceived negative information wouldn't be stored and used in the future to the insurance companies benefit.

I had the drive safe & save app for 2 years and dropped it. It was ridiculous. I dinged me up daily for accelerating too fast and braking or cornering too fast/hard. The kicker is that I was driving a bone stock 2008 GMC 2500 Duramax. That truck didn’t go anywhere fast or corner hard, and certainly didn’t brake hard. The app is designed to ding the hell out of your driving. Complete BS. We dropped State Farm after 20 years and went with another carrier. Not to mention, I don’t need big brother knowing where I go daily.

Saved like 12% by having drivewise with allstate. 10 over the speed limit and texting and driving are the main things they look for. Hard breaking, quick acceleration, and hard turning was some of the other things but dont run into much of that in my day to day.
