It’s funny how many people use it and realize they drive like assholes so they get rid of it.

They'd definitely charge me more after monitoring me
Posted on 4/27/26 at 3:04 pm to The Torch
i hate it but it does save me about $100/mo in auto insurance.

The Minimum discount State Farm will give is 1% if you are a bad driver. They will not raise your rates on Drive Safe and Save.
Mostly true. There is only one exception to this. If you were on a restricted mileage insurance plan before (usually less than 7,500mi/yr) and it turns out you are driving more miles than that, they will raise your rate to a regular plan.

My rate just constantly drops. I believe it was around $150/mo when we started, and few years later it’s below $110.
I’m not sure why people are scared of their location being tracked. You drive around with a device in your pocket that is also constantly tracking your location.

Ours has dropped a little, but my wife drives like a bat out of hell. Thanks goodness my son and I drive like pawpaws.

Any engine with a turbo or one that accelerates quickly is going to get you dinged on the acceleration category until your discount reaches zero and there's nothing they can do to fix it.
Or if you have a manual

I just hate burning up my phone battery from it. It is a drain.

These sound great until you accidentally bump into a motorcyclist at the red light. The guy falls off, gets injured, then his lawyer finds out through your drive safe and save program that your phone was open at the time of the accident, and not only was it open, but it detected a hard brake.

I’ve heard they’re terrible. Who would want to be constantly monitored by their insurance company?
I use it with Geico and it saves me money. I don't know how anyone can live in Louisiana and not want thier insurance rates lower.
You essentially get good scores as long as you don't pick up your phone while driving.
Honestly, if you are on your phone and driving you should get arrested like with DUI.

I would want to know you bumped into because you were looking at your phone.

You'll end up getting a 6% discount, but State Farm is going to make so much more money off of you by selling your data. It's up to you.

I was told that it couldn't be used to raise my rate but I don't believe that one bit.
The absolute state of idiots in this thread trusting insurance companies

Congrats on putting zero effort into finding out what data is actually collected.
Someone pulls out in front of you, you brake, but your collision detection warning goes off? Strike. Rapid acceleration to use a short on ramp to an interstate? Strike. Dog darts out into the road causing you to brake hard? Strike. Asian driver stops at a yield sign, you brake too hard, Strike.
And yet last week we had the thread about driver eye monitoring in cars being mandatory in 2027, and people had their pitchforks out.

The only major carrier that I know who could/would raise your rate is Progressive (I dont know geico).
For everyone else, it is a discount program. The minimum discount for a 3 month score is typically 5%.
The maximum discount is typically 30-40%.
Outside of the discount earned, insurance companies do not use the information on your policy. If you tell the insurance company that you do not drive for work but have the same trip 5 days a week, it doesn't change anything on your policy.
There is no big brother, here.
The data is used to try and develop new insurance products. Nationwide has a pay by the mile policy (with permanent scoring). Other companies are trying to design and implement similar insurance products.
These products are optional.
They are trying to attract people who rarely drive and drive safely (shocker).
The scoring algorithm doesn't care how fast you drive.
It cares how hard you accelerate. How hard you brake.
How many miles you drive.
Driving after midnight.
And many will ding you if you use your phone while driving.
People who do a lot of highway driving typically score better.
If you dont want to do a driver score on principle, dont do it.
If you have a video game mentality, you will learn "danger spots" in your weekly commute that make it difficult to avoid hard accelerations or hard brakes. It can make you a more aware driver of your regular trips.

Why should I take issue with it.
USAA’s is simply a “don’t use your phone and no harsh braking” app. It usually saves me about 15-20% because harsh braking seems inevitable, and sometimes I answer the phone when people call.
I have no issue with this. Why should I?

The truth is that the people who do not do the drivers score are paying for the ones who do the score.
Insurance is a collective pool of funds.
If I earn a 20% discount but my insurance company needs more premium because they are giving away too many discounts, then they are filing a state-wide rate increase.
Those who dont complete the discount score not only fail to take advantage of free savings, but they also bear the brunt of insurance companies handing out too many free discounts.

Oh no I agree, my point is that there all sorts of ways the discount results in you being spied on that can be used against you later. I stay away from these things.

I’m saving $262.00 for the next 6 months.
