Appliances - Throw Away
Posted on 4/9/24 at 11:41 am

Appliances have truly become just another money grabbing throw away item. The electric cook top just crapped out again.
In 25 years of living in the same house:
- On 3rd refrigerator (I've repaired this one twice, circuit board, capacitors..
- On 2nd microwave (doesn't get a lot of use).
- On 3rd dishwasher (repaired it once already, circuit board)
- On 3rd electric cook top
- On 3rd double wall oven, (wife blew up a glass dish inside number 2)
- On 5th washing machine (Repaired this one a month ago, its two years
old, because some idiot engineer thought it would be a good idea to use
plastic gears on the agitating mechanism and they stripped out).
- On 3rd clothes dryer (which I have replaced the thermostat limiting
gizmo twice already)
- Just installed the 6th sump pump two weeks ago.
Whirlpool, Frigidaire, GE, Samsung, Kitchen Aide you all suck.
Electronic circuit boards are the devil in appliances. End of rant.

Speed Queen. Washer and dryer.
Commercial grade, 10 year warranty.
More $$$, but seems to be worth it so far...

Never heard of a little something called "planned obsolescence?

I'm not as bad as you, but we replaced all of our appliances minus the oven when we bought this house 10 years ago. We've already replaced our dryer, washing machine, dishwasher & fridge again.

If you are going to buy a washer, Speed Queen. That’s it, end of story.
Never buy appliances from a TV manufacturing company, Samsung and LG, those are junk.
Do your homework.

I remeber my grandparents having this mustard yellow fridge, with art deco curves, on the back porch. And a blocky avocado green one in the back shed where my grandfather would keep worms and bait and beer and the like.
Those things were probably from the 60-70s and ran until the house burned down.
And I'm pretty sure the yellow one, the older one, ran again once some tubing and power cable got replaced.
Hell the damn thing might still turn on today for all I know.

We have a 17 year old super basic Kenmore top loading washing machine that’ll probably need to be replaced soon. I’d really like a higher capacity fancy top loader without an agitator because they look cool and seem to wash more, but the reviews on every one are terrible. The washers with positive reviews are largely from “incentivized” people who received free machines, making it even harder to compare. I know I’ll be so annoyed if we spend $1,300 and it breaks in 2 years, so I haven’t been able to bring myself to buy one.
I know the answer here is to buy a Speed Queen with an agitator and smaller capacity, but even the reviews on those aren’t great lately. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the old one we have lasts until I can make up my mind.

I had three, that's right three, Whirlpool refrigerators delivered to my house since January, and not a one of them cooled even one degree. Whirlpool even tried to pull some trickery on the last one by requiring an attempt at a repair, and then when the repair guy said the compressor is shot and would not recommend trying to fix it, Whirlpool said "Oh we can't take it back, someone put a wrench on it" (which he did not). Long story short, they picked up the third non working unit and I got a Fridgidaire. Was told by same repairman that Frigidaire and Bosch were the two most reliable today.

Any new appliance is crap.
If you're not trying to keep up with the Jones's, buy appliances with old fashion dial timers and switches from craigslist or the thrift store.
You can afford to fix them with NOS (new old stock) parts still available on the internet IF they give out.
I guess I lucked out. My stove, oven, dishwasher and microwave are all 23 year old Frigidaire Gallery Series and still functioning perfectly. Fridge is a 10 year old Samsung and was able to fix the fan by myself. Waiting for it and the newer GE washer and dryer to shite the bed.
Avoid anything with a circuit board. More difficult to bypass.

I bought my refrigerator in 2001. I am on ac unit # 3 since 97. People need to understand how government regulations have destroyed quality manufacturing. They know how to build great appliances, but then those wouldn’t make Mr Gore and an army of Progressive bureaucrats happy now, would it?

While I'll agree that things aren't made like they used to be... this seems incredibly excessive. If the house is 25+ years old and you aren't having issues with HVAC or health, I'd guess it's not Chinese Drywall causing the problems, but maybe you should have an electrician check things out? Voltage drops?

Basic, bare bones, manual appliances (as few circuit boards as possible) are the way to go. I'm glad I couldn't afford pricey front load washer/dryers when I wanted them. Now I know better, and I'll stick with our 18 year old washer dryer that has mechanical parts that can be repaired. Same with the range, although it does have a digital clock/temperature gauge.
Gas stove/oven, not electric.

Yep, I've been in my new house 6 years and have already had to repair the oven (heating element broke), the microwave (can't remember the part name) the dishwasher (water pump replaced), the air conditioner unit (fan motor replaced), the washer (stabilizer springs) and dryer (heating element) and put a new water pump on the icemaker in the refrigerator.
All were repaired after a quick Google search of the make and model of the appliance.

My 7 month old speed queen top loader burned up a circuit board last month. Needless to say I wasn't very happy about it, but warranty took care of everything and had it repaired in 4 days. Repairman said that is the 1st time He ahd ever seen that on a sped queen.

We bought an over the stove microwave, LG brand, in July 2022.
Last week, it stopped heating up. Turns on, runs, no heat.
Of course it's out of warranty and they want $349 to come fix it.

My wife is getting ready to buy a Wolf Induction range/oven thing. For $12k, that fricker better dance a jig.

I have my in-laws fridge in our garage from when they moved to America circa 1991. Still cools and freezes.
I've had to fix my 7 year old fridge a couple of times. Fortunately, I was able to do that with the help of Youtube.
