The new contract, which the Oklahoma board of regents approved Friday, will keep Venables in Norman through the 2029 season. The deal has a total value of $51.6 million, the regents said. The 53-year-old coach is set to earn $7.225 million in 2024 before his salary climbs to $7.625 million in 2025, eventually topping out at $7.925 million in the final year. He signed a six-year, $43.5 million contract when he arrived to the Sooners in December 2021.

Venables is coming off a 10-3 season and is 16-10 in two years at Oklahoma. He secured a top-10 recruiting class in 2024 and has the No. 7 class in ESPN's 2025 class rankings.

Programs like OU and A&M always make me laugh. All these huge extensions for these unproven coaches. 10-3 in big 12 may be 8-5 at best in SEC.

Why they didn't wait 1 more year to see OU likely go 6-6 first year is beyond me. I don't see OU or UT doing well their first year. UT almost tied 4-8 UH, 5-7 TCU, and 7-5 KSU. Those are all losses in the SEC. That would've made them 8-4 instead of 11-1. Details, details, details. They always matter.

This is the OU schedule. Tulane. Tenn. @Auburn. Texas. South Carolina. @Ole Piss. @Mizzou. Alabama, @LSU. This could easily be a 5-7 team.
