That is borrowing on $80k+ @ 7%.
Accurate but it's 100K+ which is insane for a depreciating asset
ETA NM I was referring to the total cost

Main reason to do that is if the old car is about to self destruct and you want to get SOMETHING for it rather than take a total loss.
Yeah I could see that scenario. I can't see splurging on a new expensive SUV though

My wife and daughter both drive Accords. They have been great vehicles for us.
We recently traded a 2018 accord touring 2.0 in for a cr-v. I paid $32k in 2018 and got $26k on trade.
Great cars

I just bought my wife a 2008 Toyota Corolla with 35K miles from a Nissan Dealership priced at $8K and got the out the door price at $10,200 after having a mechanic look at it. Feels great!
No need to stretch yourself thin keeping up with the Joneses.

My youngest daughter is driving my wife's old 2012. Thing is 12 years old and might have cost me 1k in non-routine repairs/maintenance over that time.

People are morons with vehicles
Absolutely. At some point in their lives, many people begin to view a vehicle as a status symbol and a part of their identity. That’s obviously the case with the fool in the OP.

I guess if he’s upside down in his current vehicle, then he’s no Warren Buffett.

The most expensive new pilot I could see near me was $46k. Think about that for a second...
He may have been 30, 40k upside down on the trade

I think there's a happy medium, though. Those smug posts from people who've been driving the same 2010 Corolla or whatever for years and years are a little depressing. I mean, can you really not reasonably afford something a tiny bit better? Even if so, did it ever occur to you to maybe get a slightly better job or something?
We only get so many years on this planet. I want at least some of that time to be spent driving a nice car.

I didn't realize you could even trade in a car that you're upside down on
You absolutely can, it just means the dealership has your nuts in their hands for longer. Also, average monthly auto sales finally came back up to the bottom of the pre-COVID range in June, since then it's dropped. Inventories have risen, but rates and continued high sticker prices have put dealerships into a position to make deals any way they can.
96-month car note anyone?

I can’t speak for others, but my quality of life isn’t dependent on the car I drive.

I gave my 2013 Accord EX-L v6 to my daughter a few years ago. It had 50K miles, and ran like a Swiss watch.
I still miss that car.

A trade in should have no bearing on the negotiated price.
Nothing in the story insinuated that it did.

I have lots of rigs, too many. No car payments. My wife, (no pics) wants a newer 2 door wrangler. (I hear ya)
She saw one she liked a few months ago and sent me in to buy it.
I ask a slick how much they want for it. He sits me down and asks for my social security number and asks how much I can afford a month on a payment.
I explained I didn't need financing.
The price they they gave me was higher than what the msrp was on the jeep when it was brand new 6 years and 40 thousand miles ago.
She's ain't got her jeep yet.

Not even a little? You wouldn't rather take a long road trip in a Yukon XL than in a ten-year-old Corolla?
I had a Corolla and it couldn't even play cassette tapes or CDs. Granted, they probably can do that stuff now, but there are positives that come with owning a nice car beyond the perceived status.
