Least thats what the BBC is reporting, how shameful of these auto companies.

If Fedgov would back off regulations they could build a car working people can afford.
Building a simple car like the VW bug these days is illegal.

Obviously the ONLY solution is to raise the labor cost of production of American cars so less people can afford them. Those UAW workers who survive the layoffs could then afford to buy more competitively priced non-UAW foreign cars!

Somehow I don't feel sorry for the UAW. That industry has fleeced the American taxpayers for billions of dollars over the years.

80 hours? Maybe on the time card, but no way in hell is that 80 hours working. Not a union worker.

Um the uk is fining you for driving an older vehicle.
It’s the climate cult making cars unaffordable.

Why would they do that? These idiot union workers vote in lock step for the same crooked politicians who push these policies. They’ll bitch about this shite all the way up until Election Day and then bend over and grab the ankles at the voting booth. They’ll vote for them same worthless democrats frick ‘em again with no lube for another 4 years.
In short, I don’t give a frick if they can’t afford the cars they build because they are too god damn stupid to stop voting for people who campaign on how they’re gonna frick the manufacturers and the energy companies.

I bet the people who build private jets cannot afford to buy the private jet they build.

Is that why they’re asking for a 32 hour week and to be paid for 40?
Posted on 9/15/23 at 8:04 am to SixthAndBarone
I saw this morning that their first request was for the median salary to increase to 300k per year, 4 day work week, and bring back a pension. Not asking for much........

Ain't that the truth brutha, spot on
There demands are so outrageous that there is no way they are going to get people on their side. No one needs to be paying attention or know basic econ to see that more pay/less work is only going to make cars more expensive. This may have been easier if done years back when people hadn't seen their inability to buy a car has vanished, but the price of cars is monday morning water cooler talk at this point.

Their current deal is that new employees (non-professionals) start at ~$37k/yr and within 4 years are given raises to ~$66k/yr. This doesn't include bonuses nor performance-based raises after the period (which they get).
What they are demanding (the last time I looked) is a 48% raise for all UAW workers (I've seen this bandied about the media lately as a 40% increase), a return to pensions and a 32-hour work week.

300k? Looks like I need to move my arse to Michigan and assemble cars! Where do I sign up?

I can't blame the UAW for trying to get a contract more reminiscent of the UAW contracts prior to the Financial Meltdown of 2008/2009. After the government bailouts of GM and Chrysler in 2008/2009 the UAW had to settle for tiered wages, no pension and reduced benefits for new hires. Since 2009 the cost of many new vehicles has more than doubled and wages certainly haven't kept up with that level of inflation.
Think about it, if you haven't gotten a base pay increase of 10%/year over the past 2-3 years you're losing purchasing power to inflation.....you have become poorer. Unfortunately it appears the federal government is going to be racking up $2 trillion deficits in perpetuity which means the 95% of Americans are going to be poorer in the future due to inflation and the devaluation of the USD
