Foo Fighters have been huge since early 2000s.

Colour and Shape put them on the map and There Goes My Hero in Varsity Blues sent them on a trajectory.

Forgot this one: I went to see Tom Petty in 89/90 when Full Moon Fever came out (first non- heavy metal/hard rock concert I attended at the time).

A no-name Lenny Kravitz opened for Petty... Let Love Rule was his only hit. He was great.

Probably not bigger than Petty, but still big.

I saw the Kings of Leon open for the Strokes on their tour supporting Room on Fire.

I followed their rise thereafter pretty closely. Loved their first two albums, then the next one a little less, then the huge one a little less. Don’t know that I’ve heard a song since that 4th album.

Aerosmith (Toys in the Attic) opened for Fleetwood Mac in City Part Stadium in 1975.

I am also almost pretty sure I saw Lyndard Skynard open for someone (maybe Eric Clapton?) at City Park as well but my memory is fuzzy from that summer. I do remember Skynard played during the late afternoon and those all day concerts went into the night.

In '93 (I believe this was the year) I saw Stone Temple Pilots open up for Ministry at the State Palace Theater. They were a last minute add, since Helmut's tour bus crashed in transit to New Orleans. Nobody in the audience knew who the hell they were, and they blew us away. They proceeded to blow up several months later into the massive success we know them to be.

Saw Manchester Orchestra open for Brand New when Manchester only had one album out.

I still like Brand New a little more but MO definitely has been more successful and more popular.

That was an incredible concert. Makes me sad Brand New is gone for good.

Not exactly but I saw Charlie Daniels open for George Jones. This was during the height of "No Show Jones" and Charlie was getting big at that time. A lot of people came to see Charlie only and then left, expecting George not to show up anyways. But he showed up.

I have been to 232 Major arena shows so outside of the Pantera/Skid Row at UNO nothing else even comes to mind.

I will never consider Black Crowes bigger that Plant. I saw Cheap Trick open for REO Speedwagon.

This will depend on how you measure "bigger" but I saw Metallica (Master of Puppets) open for Ozzy in 1986 (The Ultimate Sin). Metallica has certainly sold more albums than Ozzy as a solo artist. The gap closes a lot if you include Sabbath for Ozzy, but even then I think Metallica is still ahead.

1993 - they had a country/rockabilly festival at Cynthia Woods Pavillion near Houston. Dwight Yoakam was the headliner and they probably had six other acts on the main stage that day.

I went to grab a beer at the concession stand and they had a very small little side stage near the beer sales. I stood by myself and listened to Keith Urban play a few songs. Literally I was the only person paying attention to him.

Now I would never say Keith is bigger than Dwight (although he has a lot more #1 singles, but Dwight has him beat in album sales and being cool), but he was easily bigger than the other five acts that played that day.

Although very successful, Foo Fighters are not as big as RHCP. Not even that close going by number of albums sold

I saw Blind Melon open for Lenny Kravitz in ‘93 @ UNO

Blind Melon isn’t bigger than Kravitz now obviously but I have a feeling they would’ve been as big.
Their music was/is so good!!

I was at that show. Man that was a great show. Blind Melon was awesome. I remember No Rain was pretty big at the time and Shannon Hoon didn’t even sing it he just held the microphone up to the crowd. They were already sick of it. But they jammed out the rest of their songs.

Maroon 5 opened for matchbox 20 at the lakefront in 2003 right when songs about Jane came out.
