In Nov 1987 at Tipitinas I saw Jane's Addiction open for Love and Rockets. On the ticket it was misspelled as "James Addiction."
In 1990 at Tipitinas I saw Nine Inch Nails open for The Jesus and Mary Chain. Saw them for $1 a few months later too.
In 1990 I saw Alice in Chains open at Tips for someone I cant recall currently. Anyone recall who?
Side note...How awesome was Tipitinas back then? I got to shove Eddie Vedder up to the basketball goal that hung on the cross beam in like 1990 or 91.

I can't think of too many examples, certainly not on a major level anyway. I saw Rammstein and Limp Bizkit open for Korn in 1998. Saw Breaking Benjamin open for Godsmack in 2003, and get heavily booed. Don't know if they actually got bigger than Godsmack but it was pretty close. Chevelle opened for Filter and Hank 3 at Bon Fete or whatever it was called in downtown Baton Rouge in 2001. Speaking of Filter, I saw Helmet open for them around 2011 when Helmet was probably the bigger band at that time.
On a smaller scale, I saw Meshuggah open for Ministry on their "final tour" in 2008. Machine Head opened for COC in 1997, and Dying Fetus open for Suffocation in 2004.

I don't know about being bigger but back in the 70's to early 80's Mothers Finest routinely blew away the bands they would open for. They were really good live

I saw Nothing But Thieves open for someone at The Varsity. I can’t even remembers who the headliner was. Maybe Mutemath?

Super jealous of your list. I wish I could have seen NIN with Jesus and Mary chain and Pearl Jam at Tipitinas. I think I only made it to Tipitinas once to see Dinosaur Jr.

By a pretty large margin.
Edit - I retract my statement. Didn’t realize REM has sold 90 million albums in their career. Not a lot of up-to-date statistics on Radiohead, but I saw an estimate of 47 million. I wonder if Radiohead releasing a few albums during the streaming era influences that.
Still though, Radiohead can still headline large festivals and produce a tour of sold out large venues. Not sure REM would have that pull.
