LSU Military Museum's Director has nothing on this in his LSU ROTC uniforms. LSU archivist at the library is going through the band pictures through the years. I think it's band officer's or Director's cap. Might be earlier than I originally thought but no one has presented a good photo of the band ...
Now - this is very likely before the Ostwald cap could have been a factor (this picture is 28-29), but look at the up front trombone player - THAT looks reasonably like a gold/silver braid style strap as opposed to the others
Interesting as someone replied from LSU stating that Ohi...
Now - this is very likely before the Ostwald cap could have been a factor (this picture is 28-29), but look at the up front trombone player - THAT looks reasonably like a gold/silver braid style strap as opposed to the others
I saw this picture and I do believe it's band related. I...
That's the insignia device worn on the cover (cap/hat) of students in the ROTC program in the 1940s and 50s
No, thanks for tangent and information. Lol. This is the reply from the Director of the LSU museum. So who flipping knows. I am not sure about the hat. It doesn't c...
ignores tag inside hat that reads: "1 Apr 13"*
Definitely didn't ignore it. I'm not sure what date that would be? Can't be 1913 nor 2013. Company wasn't in business on either date. If the "1" is the year...what year would that represent? ...
I’m sending him a note now. He’ll read it in the morning.
Appreciate it. ...
construction, it appears to be an interwar period (1919-1939) dress hat for an Army officer. Surplus items would have been used by ROTC programs. A commissioned officer example from that same time period (very similar in structure to the one in your picture) can be found at this eBay auction...
Have you reached out to the Cadets of the Ole War Skule organization?
Not yet. I have reached out to the LSU Brookshire Military Museum, LSU archivist at the library, LSU band chapter of history and alumni secretary and Ms. Faye Phillips who wrote A History of LSU’s Marching Band. ...
Can’t help you but that’s a cool piece of history.
It really is. I collect WWII medals and anything vintage LSU and in 30 years I've never come across another cap or the LSU officer's insignia ever again. I just wish it could be identified. Something else I found not long ago that...
Could be. They did have drum majors after 1946 I believe is the date they broke away from ROTC but the uniforms remained military until 1958. They had drum majors previous but it was earlier before Huey P. Long was assassinated. After he was killed LSU went back to military and therefore had ROTC Ba...
Perhaps a non standard cadet uniform for honor guard, Pershing Rifles, Scabbard and Blade etc..
Been searching that too, but nothing yet. I can't have the only cap like this. I'm waiting to see who made the band uniforms in the 1950's. The History and Alumni Secretary of the LSU...
The band director Castro Carazo in 1935 had the gold cord. However once he left, LSU went back to military. Later Thomas Tyra in early 1960's cap has the gold cord as well. However, I can find no pics of any band director conducting between 1946 - 1960. Lol. Apparently the band was still in militar...
The LSU military museum says the color nor the cord is correct to be ROTC. Their strap was leather. The archivst at LSU library thinks possibly Band Director or Band Officer. He's still researching. Not many uniforms nor hats pre-1958 from the band made it from the Music Hall fire. I'm too leani...

I've had this military style cap for several years. It appears to be late 40's - 50's. It has officer ROTC/Army insignia but the cap was made by Ostwald, Inc who made band uniforms. I reached out to the Ms. Faye Phillips who authored the book on the history of the band but she is stumped as well. I ...
My great Uncle owned a store on Airline and 42 during those years and had 100s of posters. Luckily they kept a few. My grandparents lived right in front of the track. Crazy stories of that event....
