This is a stupid thread beating a dead horse. but I’ll bite.
Historically It’s a place built by generations of transplants from the southeast and Mexico. So with that you could make a case it’s where the southeast meets the southwest.
East Tx is southern (SETX is more cajun than many parts of north and central LA).
West and South Tx is southwestern
North Tx is fringe southern and fringe Midwestern
Central Tx is the only pocket that has a truly distinct culture. The German hill country has its own architecture that many imitate. It’s got it’s own food style.

To me, southern states have a higher percentage of African American population. All southern states have been heavily influenced by blacks over the centuries.
This is the most accurate statement on this thread. People won’t admit it but blacks heavily influenced and still influence southern culture. So much of what people love about southern food, music and sports would not exist without the influence of black people.
That being said, here again Texas is slightly southern. There’s a decent population. I’d say 65% southwestern still.

Isn’t I-35 the dividing line between West Texas and Coastal/East Texas?
I know the weather is a lot different west of I-35 than east of it.
I grew up in San Angelo which is called west Texas (it's actually the center of texas) and it was still 7 hours to get to El Paso.
I live in Temple now, which is the half way mark of I-35 north to south.
the main difference is in West Texas, i would order breakfast burritos and get two 6 inch tortillas for about $4. when i moved to Temple, i ordered 2 breakfast burritos and it cost $12 and they gave me two 12 inch tortillas stuffed. i then learned that they called them tacos here. i've asked numerous people about their experience and it's the same.
i delineate Texas' two regions by tacos and burritos.

Another case of the Science not being settled.

West Texas and the panhandle are more culturally aligned with the Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming. East Texas/Piney woods are as Southern as Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Texas is western… BUT i have always though that Houston has more elements of Louisiana and the South than Shreveport does- even though Shreveport is actually *in* Louisiana .. Living in Houston for a while, i attended more crawfish boils than i ever did in La..
There's a lot of South Louisiana in SE Texas. Some of my ancestors moved from Vermillion Parish to Jefferson County a long, long time ago. And more kept coming.

Wow never would have thought so many of the OT to not understand Texas. Seems some of you that live there don’t even understand your own state as well as I do, someone from outside the state. It’s an undeniable fact Texas is southern and the question was actually rhetorical. Just ask the question, do Texans act more like people from the gulf like Mississippi, alabama, Louisiana or like hippies from California?
I've lived in Houston for 30 years and Dallas before that. Texas is most definitely not southern. They share some foods, some attitudes, etc. But all the things that truly make something southern are just not here. They aren't exactly western either. They have a little bit of the Western Frontier (especially in attitudes), a little bit of the south (food, people are nice), and a LOT of it's own thing.
Texas is Texas and nothing else.

El Paso is closer to LA than to Louisiana.
And Houston is closer to Nashville than it is to El Paso. Which is why you really cant define Texas as one "thing".

Living in Houston for a while, i attended more crawfish boils than i ever did in La.. and there are far more LSU fans in the Houston metro than there are even in New Orleans (not per capita, but more total).. i think a straight up trade of Shreveport for Houston would make sense, though of course Texas would never agree to it .
Lived in both these places and I mostly agree with this.
I've thought the Shreveport/Houston swap made sense for many years!

Everything east of I-45 is the South.

Texas is where the south, the west, and the great plains converge.

Houston used to be Texas now it’s just a big spur on the boot of Louisiana.
Seriously, Houston tries so hard so be like Louisiana.
