Not to get too philosophical, but I once heard that laughter and crying are the opposite of what we believe them to be.
That is to say, when we laugh at something, it's done so in cruelty and shows our internal state of negativity.
Whereas when we cry, it is an expression of empathy and compassion showing our ability to be good.
This is why when we are overwhelmed with happiness, we don't laugh...we cry tears of joy.
