Every new young announcer goes through this cycle I feel

When they are new they feel fresh and insightful, usually just retired so they are super locked into NFL plays and dynamics and study their arse off

Then they do it for a couple seasons and everyone tells them how awesome they are, they stop doing the research and lean into the things people like (for romo it’s the grunts and him trying to guess the play) and eventually they become like every other announcer whose saying the same fake football intelligent phrases we’ve all heard for the last 50 years

Romo used to nail those guesses about the play his first two years, and now I feel like he’s wrong nearly every time either that’s from not as much research, or probably more likely because of how quickly the league can change on offense.

Happened to Collinsworth a few years back. Gruden as well. Gus Johnson even.

I think a lot of the praise came from having someone competent in the booth compared to so many other terrible combos. Essentially, the lesser of multiple evils. The other thing is he actually pays attention to the plays/game in front of him and knows more than 5 facts about each team for the 1 game that he calls a week.

I don't need guys on TV to explain to me what's going on in a game. Most of it is just talking to fill air time with constant useless clichés. If I'm at a live game I don't have a commentator describing what I'm seeing.
Every year the National Championship game has the sky cam broadcast, with no announcers, and it's personally the best way to watch a game.

He’s also incorporated a lot of grunting and other noises into his repertoire and there were plenty of those on display Sunday

This has made me cool on him.

I like Romo as a commentator. But yesterday he was off. On the Gabe Davis drop/swatted deep ball he called that a "possibly game saving play" by the Bengals defender. The Bengals were up 14 and it wasn't even a scoring play

I think people's problem with Romo and Chris Collinsworth is that the act like Mahomes and Allen are above criticism and don't always give due credit to other quarterbacks.

Romo sounded lazy and looked fat.

On the other side of the spectrum, Greg Olsen was excellent yesterday and has been excellent.

Olsen has always been known as a really smart guy, and it shows when he calls games. Him and Burkhardt are solid.

TV announcers make me appreciate Deuce even more. He has an amazing eye for detail and explains complex football concepts in layman's terms. He can even correctly predict the call on a bogus flag.

My only issue with Greg Olsen is that he has a slightly similar voice to Mike Golic Jr. who is absolutely unbearable so my brain irrationally hates Olsen sometimes.

I’m surprised Awful Announcing found enough time to quit breathlessly posting about what Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless said.

To be fair, if you have a sports website called Awful Announcing, you are going to spend a ton of time covering what those two clowns say.

I hope you’re not talking about the Burrow to Chase touchdown.

I believe the exact quote was "that was a perfect pass just a little outside"

Definitionally speaking, Mr. Romo, it ain't perfect then.

No kidding. Madden was the best not because of his insight into the game but because he was entertaining. I find Romo to be entertaining. When he starts making all those grunts and noises you know things are getting tight.

By contrast Greg Olsen was spot on in his color commentary but was also as dry and boring as stale bread. The Fox booth is far behind the other booths right now and it's not because of technical proficiency, it's because it's drone and not entertaining. Maybe the #1 Foz crew just needs time to grow on me.
