Awful Announcing: NFL viewers seem to have had enough of Tony Romo this season

It wasn’t that long ago that Tony Romo was considered the next great NFL color commentator, earning himself an impressive payday from CBS based on his ability to predict plays and provide insight. Something happened in the intervening years, however, and Romo’s stock has been dropping precipitously this season in the eyes of many. The former Cowboys quarterback continued to disappoint viewers Sunday with his performance during the NFL Playoff showdown between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals.

Romo’s thoughtful analysis has been replaced by a lot of platitudes and very obvious statements that don’t add much to what we’re all watching. He’s also incorporated a lot of grunting and other noises into his repertoire and there were plenty of those on display Sunday. Not to mention that, more than once, Romo said out loud that he wasn’t actually sure what had happened during a play, which is the last thing you ever want to hear an announcer admit.

I'm a huge fan of Romo doing color. I thought he was awful yesterday. He made a lot of "fact" statements that were really only opinions.

"I don't like tony romo anymore so now I'll write an article as if its fact that he sucks now. In order to support this I'll do a twitter search of people that agree with me, put the screen shots in the article and declare it unanimous that viewers across the board also don't like him."

you didn't like him saying things like, "that was a perfect pass if it was in bounds"?

On the other side of the spectrum, Greg Olsen was excellent yesterday and has been excellent.

Romo has sucked since day 1 and I stand by that

I remember when he first started it was all “Wowza he predicted the play”

Yea he finally got it right after 25 attempts so cool

Sounds like Romo played a round of golf with Trump recently

I only make a point to watch Burrow and Chase, so the rest of anything NFL is truly nothing of interest to me.

The only reason people praised Romo in the first place was because he had a knack for predicting plays right before they happened. It was almost as if he had played in the NFL and watched a ton of game film and knew what to expect when he saw certain formations from the offense and how the defense responded to those.

I was in the minority of never really liking him. I tried to when everyone was up his arse to start but something about his voice just annoys me.

I will say I still prefer him to the shite fox trotted out this week. At least romo shows emotion.

I never liked him much either. He talked too much. Everyone slobbered his knob, though, so you got slammed if you said anything. It’s tough always being right.

Add Romo to my list that includes Ryan Clark of people I hated before they became cool to hate.

I've been anti-Romo since pretty much day one. He wowed people early on by calling plays before they happen, but the longer you are not playing the harder that is to do.

As a color guy otherwise he freaking STINKS.

"Uhhhhhh OOOOOOOOO Jim I don't knooooooow uhhhhh eeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhh ooOOOOOOOOOOOO errrrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm"

Awful and I have been consistent on that forever

he was fine I just think Fox's production is what does me in. It just doesnt feel as good as CBS. Maybe some of it is fox ended up on the short end of the stick with the announcer shuffle and is still breaking in new people, IDK.

Wish they would offer us a broadcast (like they did years ago) with no commentary at all. Most of these booth announcers have diarrhea of the mouth and ruin the games.

I’m surprised Awful Announcing found enough time to quit breathlessly posting about what Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless said.

That's complete bullshite. Romo is one of the best in the business and hasn't changed from day 1.
